Bmw E46 speedometer

Hi, I would like to know if someone can tell me if the speedo on the E46 318i works of the gearbox? I am planning a Lexus conversion, and I don't know how to incorporate the speedo into the new auto box. As for the rest, I am sorted with regards to the instumentation and warning lights. This conversion will cost just a little bit more than buying a 2nd hand 318 engine, which is why I am opting for this route.

hey buddy, the speedo on the e46 is taken of either the rear left or right wheel sensor, so regardless of the engine/gearbox converion you should be good to go, how are you calibrating the rev counter/temp gauges?

I found a guy in Pretoria through a buddy who reckons he can built a conversion board for me, which will then give correct readings on the existing instruments. When I am finished installing the engine, I will see if he is telling the truth or not..... Otherwise, the only route to go is aftermarket gauges, which I don't want to do because it looks cheap. But it's my personal feeling, some people might like it. The other thing I need to do is to move the battery. The battery box must be cut out to privide space for the exhaust system, because I am installing double pipes. Where to put it, is still one of my concerns.
