BMW E46 320d shudder

I am experiencing the weirdest shudder on my E46 F/L. If I accelerate I get a really bad shudder from the back suspension. It feels much the same as the typical clutch shudder, but it is from the read of the car. If I remove my foot from the pedal the shudder disappear. If I kick the pedal down, it get much worse. Towing a trailer makes it nearly undrivable. Where can I look?

If the car is only doing this during a certain rev range, it could possibly be your guibo for the drive shaft. Google and diagnose your symptoms, lots of information on e46fanatics.

It is not really restricted to a certain ref range, rather to the amount of load. The heavier the vehicle pulls, the more serious the shudder. If I drive in 2nd or 3rd gear and boot the pedal to the floor, it feels as if the rear suspension might vibrate totally out of the car. If I lift off and let the vehicle keep a constant speed, the vibration goes away. I gets worse on hills where the car has to pull harder and disappears on downhills.

whats your mileage on? Being a diesel it could engine mounts , prop guibo or carrier bearing or even the diff bush as suggested.

I would give all of these a quick check. :coolShake:

Inspect gearbox mounts also. Most likely it will be something to do with propshaft. Guibo or carrier bearing. Try to sort it out quick or you could need to replace entire propshaft.

Hi, I eventually stripped the propshaft, and the Guibo and center-bearing rubber is shot. Both needs replacement. Any ideas as to what the cost will be and where to buy them from? Preferably a company that delivers, since I am in Postmasburg....

Both those parts I would advise getting oem. They are pricy. You can opt for using pirate but those are known not to last very long. Give this guy a call and have your vin number ready. 082 446 7373 Mohammed. While you are there replace the gearbox mounts. Those are cheap.

Another thing is please please mark the propshaft. You need to take it apart to replace the bearing. When putting it back it needs to go back together the same way as it came apart otherwise you will have balancing problems which can be very costly.

I replaced the center bearing, the rubber was totally torn, the Guibo seems ok, not really very worn. Took the car for a spin and the shudder is still there. Noticeably less than before, but still there. Anything above 80 km/h when accelerating. It seems to get worse the more torque you put on the rear wheels. Where else can I look?
