Hello All!!!
Bought my E46 320d M Sport Pack (6 Speed manual - ZF BOX) a few weeks back, but only noticed a strange noise coming from clutch few days after collection. Grinding noise coming from drivetrain only when stepping on clutch pedal, but goes away when fully pressed down. To me it sounded like worn release (thrust) bearing.
Clutch did feel low, and experienced slight vibration while driving. So, decided to pull the gearbox and replace the clutch kit (LUK).
After taking everything apart I noticed that DMF had a lot of play (Too much and had to be replaced as-well). Non, spare shops in my town had a new LUK DMF in stock, so found used one from a friend with no play (Came from low mileage E90 320d – Same PN)
Put everything back together, Started the car, noticed the noise that’s bugging me is still there!!! Only low pitch (Not nearly as loud as before.) So, decided to give it a few days, just to check if it goes away.
1000KM later, The noise is the same as before (Not louder, not softer than before)
Took the car to one of my friends today (EMI), he took car for a drive, came back and said that its definitely NOT DMF because car doesn’t have vibration at all. (Driving or at idle – it did have before replacing clutch kit and DMF)
I’m a bit lost here, Any ideas?
I didn’t replace CLUTCH PIN, and currently suspect it might be related, or possibly cause.

Here is the link to a video I took just now.

If anyone is having the same issue, It ended up being the DMF (Dual mass flywheel.

Replaced it AGAIN, but this time with a new LUK. 30 000KM Later noise still gone.

Yeah these dmf's are a pain. Don't be surprised if it starts making a noise again soon. They are just like that. I also have a new one and find that I need to start and switch off the car with the clutch pressed it to prevent the dmf rattle.
