Calypso, do yourself a favour and go and speak to Hennie at Belgic Auto as well. He's ex BMW and I'm sure he'll be able to put you on to someone, if he can't do it himself. R70K sounds ridiculous? What about a used box from someone like Merbeda?

Belgic Auto - 041-4532965 ask for Hennie.

Hope you come right bro!

R70 000 for a new gearbox from BMW does not sound too bad considering it is an X3. A year ago I was quoted R48 000 for a new gearbox for my 7...and that is an 11 year old car...

I think he said X5. Surely someone in SA has had the sight of mind to re manufacture these boxes and make himself a tidy profit! After all, they are ZF boxes and parts should be available!? BMW are surely ripping the ass out of the prices once again! I cannot see how they can justify R45K and R70K for a gearbox, when it surely does not cost them more than R10 or R15K to make it.....

Sorry, my mistake, it is an X5 :)

It seems that people around here, JHB that is are happy to charge a shed load for these boxes new and to rebuild them. I got a quote from a reputable gearbox place to fix my 7's gearbox. The quoted me R18K worst case scenario...and that is just to rebuild the Reverse Gear Clutchpack and sort out the valve body...
There is a ZF supplier here in JHB, but I shudder to think what they would charge for a rebuild!

This is why I am not driving my 7 at the moment. The gearbox has packed up at 171000KM. I have no Reverse and the gearbox popped into TransFailsafe about 3 weeks ago after driving with the car slipping like mad in Reverse for about 2 weeks...

Where the hell do you come up with R18 000 to rebuild a gearbox in todays economic climate :(

Last time I asked TuneTech, they gave me a worst case figure of around R20K if a BMW auto gearbox breaks ...

ZF do rebuild the boxs for about R40k, its cool the dealer is on my side they also agree its madness to buy a new one and agree that the old can be repaired, they have seen it happen before.
Currently they are selling 6 of those AUX fans a month, so its not uncommon for them to fail by the looks of it.

I would literally CRAP myself, if I had to pend that sort of money! R18K, R20K, R40K....what planet are these people from? Certainly not the one going through one MOER of a recession at the moment!!! Surely a manual conversion would be cheaper?

Dont think it would be possible, remember it uses the weird 4x4 gearbox and I dont think they make a manual version of that. According to realoem the box is exclusive to the 3.0d
