Yes i would love to keep the E39 just that being a 1st time owner im afraid that if i eventually do have a problem with it , it will set me back quite allot of money, so i thought that i would get something a bit newer , whats your views guys?
My opinion, is that if the car has been well maintained, you honestly shouldn't encounter any serious issues. At your milage common faults you could experience are:
The FSU (final stage unit) also known as the Hedgehog resistor which controls the aircon blower, symptoms of a faulty resistor are intermediate air flow interruptions from the aircon, battery drainage. A new FSU from the agents will set you back R1500 and is easy to install. This issue is found in both the E39 and E46.
Has the cooling system been overhauled, if so, what has been changed ? Belts, pulleys, expansion tank, water pump, radiator ? Cooling systems faults are extremely common in both the E46 and E39.
The VANOS seals are an issue, but not really noticeable on the M54 due to a software patch release by BMW. Moranor on the forum imports the seals, the entire job with labour will set you back at R4-5K max.
Control arms are another common issue on both the E46 and E39, and will set you back between R3000-R4000K max.
The ABS control unit is prone to have issues, a rebuild on the unit can be done at a reasonable price.
The tappet cover gasket tends to get brittle and leaks a bit of oil, again another common issue on both the E39 and E46.
Yours should have electric seats, it's common for the seats to twist when reclining the back rest at some stage, due to a loose connection with one of wires or the motors in the seat, I know the guy that does all seat and airbag related issues for BMW, he can sort this issue out for you at an absolute bargain.
The gearbox should be fine if the car has been driven well, a rebuild on the 5hp19 box will set you back between R12-R18K, prices vary.
Your engine the M54B30 is an exceptionally rock solid beautiful engine, if serviced regularly with proper parts and oil you won't experience any issues.
I don't mean to scare you with the above issues, there is a possibility sooner or later you may experience some of those issues.
Overall the E39 is an absolute gem of a car, voted the best saloon for it's time and regarded by many people as the best 5 series ever built, Joji Nagashima was a brilliant engineer.
Hope this helps buddy
