Hi guys, so I've been looking at all the threads with regards to the 335i e90, and seen what all the usual problems are. I'm still deciding on the best car for me now but leaning towards a 335 more to the 2010-2011 models. But want to know how these car are with reliability with the mileage being around 130k-150k kms on? What are the things to looks out for now?

Run the VIN of the car with BMW and see if all campaign s have been carried out ?

Some things to look out for.

HPFP
Wastegate rattle
Injectors

And a lead foot, cause you Will become addicted to the powa that lay within lol

Thanks for that. Lead foot I do have when alone in a car. Doing a jb4 on the car will it still keep reliability?

Most performance mods would tend to pin point the cars weak spots. Most JB4 users end up below off the stock Charge Pipe when installing a JB4.

Make sure to have a strong repair budget, an amazing car to drive, but repairs add up real quick!

Shuaib. My inputs or rather opinions based on my limited knowledge.

The 2010 upward motors are the N55's which dont have the wastegate issue and to some extent the HPFP is a little more reliable.

However if I'm not mistaken, the internals are not forged as in the N54, thus making it not as highly modifiable.

You can go for some serious boot pressure with the N54 and not fear of breaking a rod etc.

If it were my cash, I'd get me a 2009. That's going to be a face lift with the twin turbo motor and just budget for a turbo upgrade.

These are my opinions, so please, I can be wrong here!

All depends on how much power you intend on making, in my experience, an N55 thats FBO makes very similar and in some cases higher numbers than an N54 with the same mods. For most people 400whp is more than enough power (N55 FBO). If you do want more, there are Hybrid N55 turbo options to put you into the 550-600whp range quite safely. Very few people actually land up pushing beyond the 600whp mark, many say they want to, but never actually do it, and then sit with a car more prone to issues without any of the benefit.

N54 have stock forged internals and is good for Around 800HP.
Though chasing that number, you would route out the weakpoints and fix on your journey to the magical 800.
Stock Chargepipe on both N54 and N55 with JB4 is a FA-CUP....they blow off with the extra boost, and yes JB4 is a reliable mod.
IMO There is alot of he said she said as to how much power the N55 vs the N54 make, but from chatting to alot of ex 335i owners and current one's the general consensus is that the N54 can make more reliable power than the N55's, but i do stand to be corrected here so dont gun me down on this. :tiptoe:

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not going to push more mods that jb4 and maybe a downpipe. Had a modded car before and gave more problems than my stock one did. I like a car to have power but I'm not going to sacrifice reliability again. How often does these water pumps go? And what mileage do they normally go too? I'm sitting and making a decision between a 335i, 330i and 330d, but I really do like the 335i the most but need that reliability in it still.

330i in a turbo world is just a :RedNo:
335i is tough as nails and will blow you away with performance(if you worried about fuel economy, this option is not for you(
330D tons of torque and grunt and best of both worlds, but no were near 335i.

335i FTW you wont be sorry, second choice is 330D......330i as nice as it sounds......would not

I'm not really too worried about fuel economy. My 200ts sat on about 14l/100km and the scirocco is sitting on 13l/100km. I'm the reason it's a bit high. I test drove one already and it's nice. Comfortable and has the power when you need it. Just don't need a car that is as unreliable as my 200ts was.

My N54 e92 335, I have had for almost a year, my issues are\were as follows:

Note my car is stock since brand new and the only thing I have done is add the twin intakes.

Since owning it I had a boost leak, which cost me R20 to fix and I had one coilpack fail which cost me R450. My car has 155xxx km on it and still goes like the clappers.

Currently I have the common oil leak by the oil filter housing to do. I am forced to sell now but I really dont want to, so I am delaying the sale for as long as I can because I just love this car to much but I need a SUV though :-(

You will not regret it. I had the pleasure of having one for a couple of weeks (N55 though) and it was an out of this world experience. As for fuel consumption I never paid attention to it because well the type of car it is haha, but if fuel consumption on the N54 is in the 14l/100km region then to be honest it will not be any different from what I used to get in the E60 525i (because consumption in that would sit at 13l/100km in town).

335i's are amazing bru the power coupled with the luxury.
