BMW 335i e90 advice

Dont waste your time with anything else, N54 is a rocker. Can make big power easy. Yeah there are some reliability concerns: LPFP , water pump, charge pipe, the regulator on the alternator but trust me when I say this its all a small price to pay for the amount of joy you'll get out of it. For the money there's nothing better you can buy. The 330i wont have enough power , a modded 330d is fun but also will have its issues and is way short of the N54. The N54 has won multiple engine of the year awards so this should tell you something. N54 FTW.

i've had my 335 N54 since '16 Oct.

Up to date i have only replaced:
Oil filter housing
Starter
Valve cover gasket

Car is sitting on 118 xxx km. Other than this, the normal campaigns have been done by BMW. and regular services have been completed.

@ 120 000km I will be doing a few maintenance replacements:
new plugs, changing of belts (prevention is better than cure),control arms and tie rods and a general service.

I've had my concerns but my 335 has been a pleasure and such fun. Long distance is a dream with an avg of 8l /100km down to Port Edward

Don't be afraid! You'll regret overthinking this decision :cartel:

Have to agree this car is perfect on the long road, I got 800km on a tank driving from JHB down

So as much as I wanted to get the 335, I'm looking at 323i auto, m sport with <50k kms on. I know the 335 is a very nice car but I'm letting it pass on this one. I just wanted a nice family car. Will update when time gets closer. Speed isn't my main concern at this moment as I still have the scirocco for that. What can you give me a heads up on the 323's?

if looking at a 323 rather then just go for the 325... bulletproof motors. has that deep 6pot rumble. slightly on the heavy side of consumption but decent car non the less.

have you considered a 320d or 330d??
I may take criticism from some for saying this but all round the diesel motors are better, consumption + reliability..
read up on the forum from the guys say about the diesels and i'm sure youl be impressed
if you still keen on 323 , id say rather go 330i if you want the 6pot N/A

325i then.

Fears that u might get frustrated with the power deficit on the 323i. Just cook up the extra 10k or 20k and opt for the 325i or better still the 330i.

My 325i had: Water pump replaced at 60k km. currently on 130k km
oil cooler gasket at 105k km
vanos solenoids at 120k km
oil seperator at 120k km
uhhm, 2 sets of rear tyres at 30k km each.

These are the norm issues that give in on these cars. Small price to pay for the sonorous sweet smooth scream of the six pot.

It's like it's loud but muted at the same time!

I was told by a few mechanics that the fan belt rubbings block something on an oil pump breather then they run crank bearings because of a design fault but stand corrected, the 2 different mechanics told me that it's an expensive excercise to repair the engine after the oil pump goes, can happen around 120-150 kilometres

Thanks for all the input. I knew the power issue will be brought up. This one I'm really not about the power as I said I have the scirocco for that, but more for a bigger family car. The 323i is family members car and I know the history of the car, that's why I was asking of the model. So the water pump is like a general issue on the e90s. My biggest thing I need now is reliability. Will keep you guys posted when I make the decision.

So with all the bad (but good) influences, I'm sticking to the 335i. Just one question, how are the manuals in this? Just keeping my options open, would prefer the auto but the manual I won't mind either just need to know how the manual gearbox and clutch is?

Nothing wrong with them, I got the E90 335i N54 MSport in manual.
It's fun and tough as nails, only downside is when you snap change whilst dropping the hammer, the power cuts for like a second between shifts, then it's on the power again. But that is normal I believe cause it's got something to do with the clutch and the gearbox....But nothing MHD won't sort out :roflol:

Hope that answers your question bud.

Thanks it clears up a lot. So now I'm looking at a 2010 model but when I checked the vin number on bmwvin it says it was produced 30/11/2009 and had the n54 motor. Car has 91k kms on, injectors was changed and clutch only. No water pump nor turbo issues. What's your advice on this? Car has a fsh

Run the Vin with John Lodder from BMW.

You won't go wrong with a manual. Engaging drive. Your Roc probably has a DSG so you are at ease with 2 pedals. You will enjoy the manual once you start asking more from it. The CDV causes the delay in power. You can do the CDV delete mod and the car will shift much quicker. I want to do this mod as well. There is a thread on how to get the mod done. Good luck on your search.

The scirocco has made me like auto with a manual option and I wanted the 335 in auto. Not saying I won't take a manual. Now my issue is the water pumps I read all start giving in around 100k kms this car is at 91k kms

my 335 is on 118xxx km and no issues with waterpump. my waterpump was replaced along with some of the other components under a recall campaign with the newer spec parts. just check the vin with BMW to get a printout to check what was replaced.

End of 2009 production date will normally tie up with a 2010 registered car. The mileage is nice and low but the service history leaves a little to be desired.

The big ticket items still to be done are, water pump and thermo (only because they have a usable life of 120k kms.) turbos for waste gate rattle, hpfp is probably still version 1 or 2.. However these items will be covered with a decent warranty plan.

Let the buyer beware rather than getting the car and blaming the model for the poor service you receive after that.
