I've also wondered about this and also just thought it was a software/emissions change, but it does seem that there was a mechanical chance. From what I have read it seems that the basic N52B30 (330i) was available with four versions of power / torque output:
160kW / 270NM, 190kW / 300NM, 195kW / 315NM and 200kW / 315NM
The 160kW version as far as I know is the 328i(x) badged models in certain countries while the rest are 330i(x) models. All of these engines use the Valvetronic system. The newer N53 and of course N54 twin-turbo engines use the direct injection system but don't have Valvetronic whereas the N55 does.
I know that locally the initial 330i engines (like with mine) have the silver covers, whereas the newer 200kW 330i engines have the black covers, so curious to know what all is different other than the simple colour change of the engine covers. That is, can the older engines be "software updated" in a manner of speaking? BMW's current PDF brochure shows the current 330i as 190kW and 310NM... :thinking:
