BMW 330i pre 2007 and post 2007 Difference

Before I recently bought a late 2005 330i sportpack in very good condition with low distance I did some research on the 330i. I noticed that the latter models produced about 5% more output and about the same increase in torque. What is the difference?

I reckon the difference is 5% more output and the same increase in torque.

I suspect that the difference between the BMW 330i pre 2007 and post 2007 is 5% more output and about the same increase in torque.

This is a bit of a conundrum. Research done showed that the latter models produced about 5% more output and about the same increase in torque. If I was a betting man I would have assumed the differences would be about 5% more output and about the same increase in torque.

Now let me throw a curve ball. What are the differences ?

Any idea if that was a physical upgrade or just software?

Edit: Thinking logically about it, it would seem that if the engine designation changed this would be physical change of the engine, but could be wrong.

The earlier brochures noted 190kw and 300NM, whilst the latter noted 200kw and 315NM. The change in the engine designation from N52 to N522N explains a lot. The question remains is it a harware or software upgrade?

If I were BMW I would have done it though software, as it is much cheaper doing it through software than through hardware.

I read in the BMW Car Magazine (UK publication) that the later models had a direct fuel injection system system.

I've also wondered about this and also just thought it was a software/emissions change, but it does seem that there was a mechanical chance. From what I have read it seems that the basic N52B30 (330i) was available with four versions of power / torque output:

160kW / 270NM, 190kW / 300NM, 195kW / 315NM and 200kW / 315NM

The 160kW version as far as I know is the 328i(x) badged models in certain countries while the rest are 330i(x) models. All of these engines use the Valvetronic system. The newer N53 and of course N54 twin-turbo engines use the direct injection system but don't have Valvetronic whereas the N55 does.

I know that locally the initial 330i engines (like with mine) have the silver covers, whereas the newer 200kW 330i engines have the black covers, so curious to know what all is different other than the simple colour change of the engine covers. That is, can the older engines be "software updated" in a manner of speaking? BMW's current PDF brochure shows the current 330i as 190kW and 310NM...

Anyway, found this while searching, quite interesting info: http://www.worldcarfans.com/104071810442/bmws-new-six-cylinder-engines---in-depth

Not very familiar with the 330i motor but i do know that it has a two stage (i think) intake manifold. The older model may have come with the single stage intake.

Also a few changes to the body...

Creases in the bonnet, New headlight design, new tail light design, a few tweeks in the interior...

im sure an exhaust without all the emissions crap and a tune will yield at least 5% gain... trying to update it to the new spec engine will be too expensive for what it is worth...

The newer model had a few management software tweaks and a few newer hardware bits to the engine, the overall engine is same though. In Euro spec it's more economical and has less carbon emissions, but i believe the SA spec engines were 'detuned' back to the older version last yr as with our rubbish fuel the 200kw engines produced more carbon than the previous 190kw. So to keep the price down the 190kw is currently sold.

A marginal 0.2s increase in 0-100kph is the only real difference between the 2, not much really in real world driving.. suppose, everyone wants to go faster though! :)
