BMW 320i 2006 Oil

Hi guys.

My car started using oil. I seems to leak from the back part of the engine onto the manifold, so some morning I drive in a cloud of smoke coming from the engine. :-(

I think I can probably just tighten the head... But I'll have a decent look at it.

Another thing that's bothering me is a loud ticking noise from the tappets. I think it's a hydraulic lifter, but it's making a lot of noise. More than sounds healthy. It almost sounds like a diesel motor now.

This ticking sound intensified since my last oil change, where I used Castrol Edge (i think...) oil.

What oil would you recommend I use for the next fill-up?

Thanks.

Howzit Pokkel,

I would recommend that you buy the oil from BMW itself.

they come in 1 litres at about R76 each, they are (Castrol bottles)
and it works out to about the same price as a big 5L

atleast then you know you using the correct oil.

If your car has a N46 motor, its most probably the Vacuum pump O-ring thats gone. You can replace the original with the large O-ring that comes in the Oil filer kit for that car. Seem easy until you try and get to the vacuum pump...

Hope this helps, had the same issue on my car...

Agree that's the problem. Also replace the O ring where the vacuum pump seals on the head

AHHH!!!

Thanks guys!

Will definitely do that!

Any idea on the ticking sound though? Do you think it will solve the problem when I put in some new oil and go for a hard drive to get it through the lifters?

Oh yes.

Another question... How do I find out which motor the car has in? N46 etc...

Okay. My dad and I replaced the seals on the vacuum pump... Thank you! Cost me R100 for both seals, but what a mission to get the pump out!!!

I managed to locate the ticking noise though. It's coming from the injector closest to the front of the car... It only starts ticking loudly, very loudly, when the engine has heated up a bit.

Do I need to worry about this?

Is there a way to service the injector, or should I replace it? How much does it go for usually?

Hi DeanoBlado.

It's not a difficult job, more of an irritation, because of the restricted working space.

I recommend that you buy a no.10 swivel head wrench to loosen the bolts. If we didn't have one, we would have probably taken 3 times longer.

We bought an oil filter to get the bigger seal, but it seemed to be a bit small... It struggled to stay inside the seal recess. It kept on popping out. At the end we used a seal from a carburetor kit we bought for my previous car (1983 Honda Ballade 130). It fit perfectly.

If you take out the seal and take it to Midas or even a BMW workshop, they will probably give you the right size. It should be around R100 I think.

PS - I recommend filling the black plastic 'pump-arm' with oil before you put the pump back, just so it have some oil in it before you start the car up again. You can remove the plugs from the side of the 'pump-arm' to get some oil in.
