Hey Members. Best wishes firstly for 2018. May it be awesome and may we all see many more awesome Bmw’s parked in our garages.

So my holidays was a road trip from Johannesburg to Namibia via BOtswana. My family and my brother in law’s family decided to take my wifes 2013 x1 facelift 2.0d with 8 speed auto and his 2013 120d with same engine and gearbox.

In total we covered just under 4000km return but boy oh boy what an amazing trip. Being a first time trip we research the trip and the does amd dont’s and began our journey. Our first leg was from Jhb to Kang, Botswana which was about 700 km and all feedback was to maintain a strict speed limit and watch for livestock on the road and no travelling at night because of livestock. Travelling via Zeerust there was a few spirited moments of bmw adrenalin that saw the torque on our cars come out but this was only the beginning.

Once out of SA Boarders the fun of driving a BMW began. Without going into detail of each leg of the trip and passing cattle, donkeys, sheep and horses romaing the major roads we had the opportunity to put our cars to the test. Along the trip you pass little towns where you need to drop from 120 to 80 and then 60 but besides that the roads are open and clear to really drive.

So initially and based on other traveller’s feedback we maintained a speed of 140 but this became monotonous and after observing the surroundings, road visibility and condition our fun of driving a BMW began. Unfortunately this trip had also costed the lives of a few hundred sorts of bugs some which still came back to SA stuck to our radiators. Our cars matted with the 8 speed box really performed like a sports car in all senses. We reached really high speeds, speeds that Will get u locked up in SA and although your focus and concentration is very important , our cars handled this without skipping a beat, no lag or engine struggle or strain. Now whilst i am aware we also do this on our road trips on major highways in Sa we only push our cars
for a few kilometres at a time and tap off but on this road trip and personally a first time life event for us was to keep high speeds for between 80-100 km at a time.

Roads were flat, clear and straight so safety was also a priority for us and our family but for us drivers this was a all time first. We also had the opportunity at times to overtake in convoy 4-6 vehicles at a time and our bmw’s soared like eagles.

Overall consumption went a little higher because of speeds but combined consumption was 7.7 for 4000km.

Whilst in Swakopmund, we travelled to Walvis bay and one of our own forum members approached me to chat as be saw the bmw’s with GP plates and it was Basil from Windhoek. Pitty be didnt have his red box with him but big ups to another forum member for extending a hand of friendship to a Bmw driver( admin can i tag him on this post)

Overall an amazin trip and Swakopmund is stunning but hats off to BMW for the diesel engines that are built bullet proof.

Well written post.
Yes, the BMW 2.0d motor + ZF box is a match made in heaven.
So good, that I ditched Audi after 8 years and 3 cars and moved to the blue/white side...

nice post! :bravo:

Ive driven the road via Ariamsvlei at the Southern border to Windhoek and further north a few times.

Great "testing" road, and minimal other cars. Only complaint I have is, its so damn straight and flat, no twisties what so ever!
