Also, if you needed a van, wouldn't you want the choice of a BMW van, rather than being forced to choose a Renault or Mazda?
And, even if you don't like and buy one, it helps BMW tap into a new market segment to make more money to spend more on R&D to make the series you actually are interested in better.

I didn't say they'd made a van before, but times change, sales targets have to be met to stay ahead of competitors etc.
Would you rather BMW not tap into a market, lose market share against Audi/Mercedes and slowly whittle away, than just buying a 3-Series or whichever model you prefer?
I'm not saying you have to like it, but someone will, and that sale will help keep BMW profitable.
The X5 and X6 was laughed at too, and so was a small BMW hatch, but these vehicles are bringing in big and important money.
There are 5 reviews up now of the i3 for example and all are very positive. BMW has to make changes, unfortunately. The core lines will still be fairly conservative and conventional.
What I said was, if I needed a van I'd much rather have a BMW van than another brand.
