I wrote about the BSH Competition Oil Catch Can in 2010, for its simplicity of design and installation. But there is a new one on the market which is light weight, high quality and an even more innovative design: The BMS Oil Catch Can.

The BSH Catch Can Review (September 2010)
The BSH Competition Oil Catch Can received mixed feedback from users. There were reports of the catch can not "collecting oil" or that the internal design does not "breathe" properly. Others reported very positively about the BSH catch can. Personally, the catch can worked well on my car. I never removed it, even for the regular BMW services because I am convinced all BMW cars should come from the factory with an oil catch can or BMW should find a solution to this: "Engine manufactures have placed a valve on the engine block which is known as a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. During engine operation, blow-by gases, as well as oil mist from the rotating components of the engine, pass through the PCV valve and are routed back into the intake for the engine to burn off. However, some of the oil mist and other products settle along the engine intake and over time form a "gunk."
During the time of using the BSH oil catch can, I had no oil blow-by in the IC or in the intake piping which made me believe the BSH can was doing its job.
In the picture on the left, I collected about a quarter of oil (where the Red arrow points) from September 2010 - March 2012. About 9,000 kilometers of varied driving. The only issue I have with the BSH can is that the Dip stick is too short. I was wondering for months why the can was not collecting oil by checking the dip stick...but infact it (was) collecting oil. If the dipstick reached the bottom of the can I would have been able to see the accumulation of oil.
BMS OIL CATCH CAN MINI REVIEW:
BMS has been producing some very innovative products from the very popular JB4, intakes to the more recent BMS spacers. Each BMS product seems to fill the niche market perfectly. I just had to try the BMS Catch Can. The entire kit exhibits quality and I look forward to reviewing its performance in a few months time.
Internally the catch can has an integrated baffling system that forces oil to separate from the air as it passes through. This oil then falls into the gut of the can. Simply unscrew the base of the can to empty it's contents every 3-6 months. IMPORTANT: The oil catch can collects the oil mist and condenses the fuel vapors while allowing "cleaner" gases to be passed back into the intake.
BMS CATCH CAN INSTALLED ON MY CAR:
Pic Below: Attaching the Can in this way will prevent it from rattling during driving. Drilling on the body of the 335 is not necesary since there is already a small screw that you can attach the Can plate against.
BMS recommends the installation of the catch can as in the pix below. See the use of a U-Bend and the location is conveniently hidden and placed under the cowl:
You will read alot about the placement of Catch cans; Can size; length of the hoses; the ideal place to catch the oil and PCV ventilation etc. My view is, that you decide, what works on your car. Manufacturers of oil catch cans recommend different locations. Horsepower Freaks (HPF), RSD, BSH use the same location as in the pix on my car. AR Design (AR) uses a location near the radiator on the side of the intake. And BMS prefers a stealthy location under the cowl. It is all up to you.
What you want to achieve with the Oil Catch Can - Is preventative maintenance: Keep oil & contaminants out of your BMW air intake system and increases the engines performance and longevity.
