Blue rings on brake disc/rotor? - Dealer blaming me?

Hi guys

Haven't asked for some advice in a while :)

Took my car in to BMW today for a clunking sound with the suspension - nothing else. They replaced wish bone and tension strut rubbers and all is fine now :)

They also replaced my front brake pads as they said they were worn.

Go to pick up the car, all is well.

I take a drive for a few km's to test the car out. Hit some traffic. Then I notice when I brake a bit at low speeds, and there is a loud screeching/squealing sound when braking at certain pressure at low speeds. It is not the quiet squeaking sound that most cars get with the brakes. This is LOUD.

Now I take it back to them straight away to show them and they take it back into the workshop. They come back to me saying there are "blue marks/rings" on the front brake disks which is not normal and caused by "excessive braking". So they want to call the regional manager out to have a look at it.. He will only be available in October so now I have to wait until this guy is available.. WTF?

- Now I do NOT excessively brake the car.
- The problem was not there before I took the car in.
- SURELY they must have seen the "blue rings" when they replaced the front brake pads.

Could it be the new pads aren't bedded in properly yet? The screeching/squealing is LOUD though. Never had this before..And surely they would have told me this? I was doing some reading online and apparently the blue colour is normal when bedding the brakes in??

I don't know too much about brakes.. So what are your guys thoughts/advice on this?

Thanks

Maybe the mechanic that took your car for the testdrive after he worked on it did the excessive braking. :dunno:

That's the thing I dunno if they are talking about after the new pads were installed or on the old pads? Cos if they mean on the new pads that is total bs.

Furthermore the car has been in countless times before (for a service too) and they never warned about the brake pads being worn or even checked them..

So they could very well be caused by braking on worn brake pads?

Tell them to put your key in the computer and look when last brakes was replaced on your car.
That should give them an indication on how hard you brake, cause obviously if you abuse the brakes they would wear out quicker.

I think this is the first time they are being replaced after 30,000 km. Not sure though. I should do that yeah.

But was wondering if anyone could shed some light on their analysis/blue rings thing?

search for my post on bedding brakes in, do it.

Ok Thanks. :) Will try that.

Called up their service manager and explained the problem to him, told me to take it on on Monday for him to look at.

Surely it can't just be bedding though? The whole "blue ring" thing is really irritating me !! I want to know what they are talking about. Just had a look at the discs and I didn't see blue anything?

I first thought they didn't put enough lube on the pads or something? ..

Grrrrr

Well BMW "mechanics" are known to know next to nothing.

Some copper grease might help with brake squeal.

Though I would just add here that hard braking does cause blue rings on the discs.

I wish they gave me a 3l turbo! It's a 2l. Seriously how much braking force can I make LOL..

Could be that the incorrect parts were used...again...

Sorry what parts are you referring to?

Brake pads.

Hmm not sure cos I didn't have the sound before, only after it came back from them.. Pads look new too from when I looked at them on the caliper just now.

Ugh yeah..I had faith in this dealership too..

I mean seriously, if the disc is fked, replace it and then do all the analysis you want afterwards.
