BillyBob brought his E46 in for Vanos and valve clearances.

Car was on rough idle and generally down on power.

We did VANOS- RATTLE KIT-CAMS RESET and CLEARANCES as well as checked the cam bolts which are all tightened to +15Nm and some work on the intake box, wiring and hardware.

Car is idling sweetly pulls like a demon.

Crash who visited whilst the car was there remarked as how sweet the idle is.

Here are some of the 117 odd pics we took.

This filter will be enlarged as it does not flow enough air.

This is the reason Crash came to visit.

Thanks for taking the time to enlighten us with some technical content! Really do appreciate it!

Out of interest, what intake is on the car?

Philip would be best able to confirm however it looks like a CSL copy and has an ALPHA tune.
No airflow/mass meter just an air temperature sensor with software.

Lovely intake noise.

So I've finally gotten around to taking the M3 for a dyno run after having the Vanos and shimming done at Axis..

Test 15 was the last run done on the car about 200 km after loading the base map, allowing for AFR's to adjust, while Test 16 was about 300 km after the mechanical work was carried out.

While the peak power is still in the same ballpark (flatlining after 7k RPM due to mapping issues presumably), the torque has seen a bit of a bump throughout the range, and the car overall is smoother to drive... The characteristic tappety sound of the engine is also significantly quieter after the shimming.

You'll also notice hand-written numbers underneath the 500 RPM increments, indicating AFR's logged under load at the various points.

Now that we know the car is sound mechanically, the map can be further refined, to richen up the AFR's a bit (which should yield a couple of horses), and more importantly tinker with the VANOS to help it hold the torque curve better past the 7000 RPM mark, which will result in better peak power.

A big shout out to Peter and Alex, for their meticulous attention to detail and boundless patience in ensuring that things are done RIGHT the first time. It just goes to show what can be done by a competent mechanic when he's not under the gun to get a job out ASAP for the sake of keeping a business afloat.

And due recognition to moranor for hassle-free shipping of service items and parts - you truly are a pleasure to deal with.

I honestly couldn't envision taking my car anywhere else for mechanical work in future.

Overall, a very big thumbs up to Axis. Keep it up gents.

thanks for the review :)

will be really interesting to see the numbers once fully tuned
I dont think you will see a huge gain in peak HP but rather get more peak Torque higher

Just finished BB's car with valve clearances and an engine flush and oil change.

The new map is running a lot better with the car being responsive at the upper rev range.

A great improvement on the previous base map although it still needs some refinement which I am told they are busy with.

All in all a nice conversion with a good soundtrack
