Its a pity that Phakisa is so far out and Lami is so expensive these days.

RStar as a track is horrible.

A proper fun weekend away was always out E.T side for the more adventurous.

Id like to know why you say redstar is horrible since ill be going there for the first time?

I wouldn't say Red Star is horrible, not at all. I personally didn't find it great for cars going round anti lock wise, but always thought it would be great for bikes, tight, technical and challenging. The facility as a whole is pretty darn good.

My first visit there saw the marshalls allow a harley of sorts with ape hangers and a piss pot helmet onto the track whilst A class warm up was running.

The rider would actually put his inside foot down whilst taking a corner.

Imagine 6 instructors having to box this chop in and guide him off the track for the safety of all concerned.

You never really get into a 'flow' of sorts at this track. Its just corner after corner after corner.

Everybody is different however so you may enjoy it but on all of my bikes I hated it.......even my Ducati.

Tracks like Kyalami and Phakisa are far more rewarding IMHO.

Sure, they did use some special tar that increases grip, reduces tyre wear and bla bla bla.........but the track layout and setup is just not conducive to a happy flow and enjoyment. Ive been asked to ride on the 24 hour race at that place a few times.......I respectfully declined much......however this year it seems I cant dodge the duty anymore..........:dunnoanymore:

It was coined as a 'bike only' track until new ownership took over - hence the design.

It's a very nice track, with very nice facilities.
My only gripe with it is, because of cars being allowed there, the track has gotten a bit bumpy especially in the braking zones.

I frequent Red Star and I don't have any complaints.

Yes it's not a fast flat out track like Kyalami or Phakisa, but I can definitely get a "flow" going. It's tight and technical so it's demanding both physically and mentally, ultimately that's what makes it fun.

The facilities IMHO are second only to Kyalami.

Unfortunately yes due to the previous owners allowing more and more car events the braking points on the pit straight have some bumps, but once you learn where they are you can set yourself up to miss them with a bit of practice.

Red Star also happens to be quite close to me, so due to convenience it's my track of choice. Therefore I will admit my opinion might be slightly bias. Nevertheless nothing I've stated is false...

The other thing is Phakisa no longer hold track days, and no one can afford Kyalami, and Zwartkops is really not that nice. Pickings are very slim for a good track near GP.

Phakisa does still have bike orientated track events through Track Daze, just not as frequently as they used to - last one was 19th of Feb.

And if youre going to Phakisa for just a saturday or sunday event only, then it becomes a waste anyway.

Kyalami has always been expensive, its only become worse now. Last time I was there, I was pitching under 1;59 on the old layout before Porsche took over. Who actively buys a property near a race track and then complains about the noise? :dunnoanymore:

Zwartkops was a mess on Sunday I hear as well. Different race classes messing it up for the rest sadly.

Edit to add:

Its little known that a MotoGp star actually spends a few days in December at Phakisa every year on the down low in the off season.

Also, theres a local charter of an Mc that has their annual track weekend at Phakisa each year at really low prices for entry for the weekend. The marshaling is done by some of their own members that can ride frikken well too - plus some local regional fast guys too.

Hi there gents

I know this is short notice and it's a long weekend so many will be away.

I'm headed to Red Start this Thursday (21 Mar) for a track day. Thought some of you might want to do a ride and come have a look.

Just a thought.

Would have loved to, but I've got an assignment due on Friday, so I'll be deep between the pages while you show your hate for fuel at Red Star.

Enjoy and be safe.

Goodness, I hope the two of you guys are OK.

I'm taking the bike to work tomorrow, 170km round trip, so should be fun.

Charging up the lid.

I'm ok thanks, got a nice roastie on my left elbow, a bad sprain to my left ankle and a mild concussion. Other than that just the normal bumps and bruises.
Recovering speedily, I'll be ready to ride again in a week or so, but the bike won't. She needs some TLC, fairings, handlebars, rearsets and subframe all fell victim to the crash.

Considering the location and speed of my crash both myself and the bike got off lightly.
