Like I said, marketing :bs: and BP supplies their fuel at no cost.
All the fuel in SA comes from National Refineries (NATREF) and then each brand just adds their additives. Except for Sasol of course... I think.

Actually, most of the Oil Companies have a refining presence in SA. BP and Shell at Sapref, Engen at Enref, Chevron (Caltex) at Chevref, Sasol at Secunda and Sasol and Total JV at Natref.

They all enter into supply agreements with one another at coastal or inland regions based on their refining position. So it is possible that a large part of fuel product available in Gauteng may have come from Secunda or Natref... But some of it does come from the coastal refineries as well.

And you're right about the additives, all base product is the same and additives are added at each company's depot. Well informed!

My personal experience:
- performance perspective, Engen 50ppm seems to give the best economy, while Sasol 50ppm gives the most 'kick'. BP seems to provide something in between.
- price perspective: Engen 50ppm and BP 50ppm seem to be cheaper, whilst Sasol 50ppm seems to be consistently more costly.

You need to keep in mind this experience is based on the garages in the area that I travel. There are no Shell or Total garages that I pass along the way.

In short, if I didn't care about cost, I'd always drive with Sasol 50ppm.

Hi , Thanks, and on average ho wmany KM do you get on a tank,

on my cars I tend to fill the tank when the reserve light comes on if not sooner.

So on the 120d - 6.6l/100km - mostly using 50ppm - 650-720km on the tank

X3 3.0d - 8.2l/100km - mostly using 50ppm - 720-780km on the tank

mostly sasol as it is too iffy if other garages have 50ppm

I did an informal test with my 330D

I filled up a tank of Total then BP, then Sasol, then Shell diesel.

I drove the car in the same manner that I usually do for each tank.

Total, BP and Shell all gave me an average of between 6.4 and 6.6l/100km's.

Sasol was a different story. consumption wouldnt go below 7. seeing this i took great care with that tank and attempted to get the consumption as low as possible. It ended on a starkly worse 7.2L/100kms despite my effort.

I say BP or Shell.

Only V-Power diesel for my car.
I tried BP once and won't go there again.

Guess I'm just very pro Shell, doesn't give the best fuel consumption but it does feel like the car is more responsive/ eager to go when she sips on V-power.

on the navara we only put in sasol 50ppm and total 50ppm,every 3rd to 4th tank put in 500ppm
open road get 12km on a litre and in town between 10 and 11km per litre

Why do you use 500ppm, I heard that bad, its only for trucks isnt,

Thanks, thats strange, I think I must try it for myself, so far on my 320D but driving very carefully I am getting about 800km on a tank with Sasol, I will try engen and shell and caltex
