Having been exposed to the following:
e30 323i
e36 318i
e46's numerous 330i x 2, 320d
e39 528i, 530i, M5
e60 530d x 2
e90 330i

The one I disliked the most was the e90 - sorry chaps.....

The two models that definitely stand out build, solidity, reliability wise are the e46's and e39's followed by the e60 530d's (that's why I'm driving one again currently :) )

1st: e39 (all - my choice M5)
2nd: e46 (6 cylinder models 2.5 & 3.0)
3rd: e60 (530d msport)

Good list you've got there!
Having only "owned" E36, E46, E90. And drooling about the rest I would shuffle them as follow:
1st: E46 330i
2nd: E39 M5
2nd: E60 530d

The best BMW was never actually made in my opinion, E46 M3 CSL with a manual transmission!! :praise: would've been epic but suppose you could make your own one.

My 3 favourite BMW's I've owned, and I believe 3 of the best BMW's ever made-

E36 M3 3.0 coupe
E39 M5
E46 M3 manual

Can't actually decide between the 3 but if I was pressed I'd have to say the E36. :coolShake:

I would at first say without doubt the e39 in M5 trim as the best car that BMW has ever produced. The total package is so uncompromising with as much performance as you would ever require. 4 door. Spacious. I could wax lyrical all day...

BUT the best BMW is a slightly different requirement. I think the M3 has just about defined BMWs since the first incarnation. That was a small, fast nimble sportscar that was just as practical as it was good on a track day. In addition the straight six was about as BMW as an engine could get. So obviously the best BMW wold be the E46 M3. (Csl was just to unpractical to be considered)(E36 had poor suspension E46 was a big improvement)

In my opinion, I say the best motor produced was the 2.5L that came out in the E36 325i and carried into the E46 with a few tweaks iirc.

In terms of series, it is has to be the E46, the last bit of lasting build quality.

Ultimate being the E46 M3 which I feel was the best M3 produced.

As a daily and having the best of both worlds would have to be the E46 330i but i guess that is being biased on my part:fencelook:
But there's merit in my opinion :tiptoe:
