The E30 for me was ahead of it's time. It had no direct competitor at the time & even now in 2015 they actually hold their age VERY well. They not rust buckets (relatively...compare a RWD Toyota for eg), have 'some' electronics which oddly still work, comfortable drive, timeless looks...I can go on
But besides the mass produced E30's what about the E28 & E34 M5 as well as the E36 M3 as previously mentioned.
Who else gave that kind of performance of over 200kw to the masses like M division did on such a large scale? A more expensive Porsche of the same era could get one hell of a hiding from some old guy in his big@ss E34...that must have been INSANE back then!!
Nobody gives you that anymore, if you want power you gona have to PAY now. Gone are the days of true pocket rockets.
Btw the E36 was definitely built better than the E46 IMO, it just feels more solid
