Bearing knock

I'm looking at buying an 2003 facelift e46 m3 that had a bearing knock. The previous owner said 2 conrods bent. The car is now getting repaired with 2nd hand conrods and the crank being sent to the engineers. The Mac cannot give any guarantees

If this is a shoddy repair job what could I be looking at to repairing this?

Regards

I say stay away from that car, because buying it will lead you to bankrupcy, rather get
a well maintained car and have peace of mind.google on gumtree and autotrader there are couple of affordable m 3 s.

Buy it as is at a cheaper price and factor in repair costs -then get it to a decent mech for a complete bottom end rebuild.

He's doing a patch job - so take it as a non-runner.

A rebuild on an s54 done correctly is an expensive exercise with no such thing as a "budget".

A rebuild on an s54 which has run bearings and twisted conrods is like buying a lucky packet with many unknowns

Thanks guys. From the pictures the car seemed to be a good buy at 75k and another Mac said it should cost around 30k to repair excluding engineering costs

Hence the reason for me asking the experts

75k car + 30k 'repair' + 50k hidden costs + 20k touch up goodies = rather get a better M3 with less headache

Rather turn away buddy, i know its tempting, the possiblity of owning an M car, but this one just sounds like a money pit.

Walk away, remember you get what you pay for.

It all depends how you want to handle the purchase and the rebuild, you have diff options,

1) buy the car with the motor in pieces, get a further discount on the purchase price and sell the parts for a new motor for peace of mind
2) buy the car with the motor patched up together, pull the motor and have it rebuilt correctly at your leisure
3) buy the car with the motor patched up and drive it till it breaks then rebuild
4) take the money and wisely invest it for the short term till you can save up enough cash to get a running and loved car...

Take your pick on the options available...

Most M3's out there are raped. So its also taking a chance..... could be patched up just for the sale until you drive it for some time and the issues start

The reason for considering this option was to weigh the options of doing a rebuild on the motor or buying one in a so called good condition and playing it by ear.

You looking at buying that Phoenix yellow M on Gumtree?
Looks immaculate but with a Knock I'd stay away especially being an M it will get pricey...Probably been driven very hard often to end up with this problem so i'm sure all the other bits have loads of wear and tear and I also saw that it was the SMG which should also be a scare for you bud...Just my opinion though.

a complete engine in good nick is your best bet in this case. like you say you dnt know what happens to a car before you buy it. one other con though is that its smg and so much is likely to have gone wrong unless yu hve seen it drive before the actual bearing knock
