Hi all

I've been experiencing back lash on gear changes.

I have replaced main diff bush as i suspected that was the problem and checked gearbox mounts which seems to be fine as well as engine mounts but still getting back lash, any ideas on what it could be and what else I could check?

what exactly do you mean by backlash ?

Hi Gordvisr

its a knock i get when leaving the clutch

Sounds Strange

have you recently had work done on the car before it started ?

no nothing done before this as i have only had a few months, i did the diff bush when this started

Check all bolts on bellhousing, there might be something there. sound like somethings loose.

Diff bush would of been a knocking on acceleration or deceleration not when release the clutch afaik.

Have you checked gearbox mounts?

jack the gearbox and then chack the mounts, if the mounts is worn and car is stationary you wont realy see if it is damaged or not.

I have the same problem with my Diff on my car let me know on how you solved the issue but from speaking to some gearbox and diff people they said it just needs a service to adjust the play on the prop going into the diff or might need to replace worn bushes they said the knocking is caused by excessive play on the prop.

If its an E46...the problem lies with the propshaft
I had the exact same prob with my E46 and after replacing all diff bushes, gearbox mounts, cdv delete etc... Finally got the prop rebalanced and aligned along with new couplings etc and it was smooth thereafter

My Wife's 320i has always (since I bought it with 150k km on the clock) had a "donk" sound when changing gears and sometimes when engaging 1st gear while sitting at the lights. At the time when I bought the car I had the suspension and all rubbers under the car thoroughly inspected along with the subframe bushes and giubo flex disk couplers, all seemed fine. It doesn't do it all the time, but when it does it is obviously a bit annoying. Has not gotten any worse since and the car is rapidly closing in on 200k km.

Hi guys thanks for all the help and advise, turns out it was actually the trailing arm bushes that were worn, car feels like new now after replacing them, and handles like its riding on train tracks around the bends
