B58 Update

The B58 is a closed deck, which is a lot better than the N55 open deck.
Basically the sleeves are better supported and can take more boost, heat , stress etc.
The crank is only as good as it’s design. I can’t comment as I have heard no reports yet. Hi
FWIW, the S55 M4 engine has a weakness in that the cam chain gear on crank can come loose and cause major damage.

If you go look at any built motor, the block is your backbone and needs correct strength to support twisting action and combustion.

FYI, the coyote normally aspirated V8 in the mustang can be boosted to supply 600kw safely .
That to me it is the sign of a good design. The B58, which is designed for boost , (hence should be stronger), should be able to supply 400kw safely.
Only time will tell.
Obviously there are many other limiting factors such as gearboxes, driveshafts etc.

My thoughts exactly, not sure why guys think it's not as good as the n54,n55.

Its obviously better. Look at the RGM motorsport one
. 295kw from software, crazy

The B58 isn't perfect. Compared to the n54 it's very difficult to setup a JB4 map 6. It's has hard limits on the fueling system. The torque limiters on the zf box are a pain. Fortunately those issues are now dealt with the latest flash offerings.
MG Flasher is available for Android phones and looks promising. MHD should be released shortly and hopefully it will be a much cheaper entry point to get a flash (or at least a free BMS Backend flash)
That leaves the gearbox limiters. There are a few offerings currently but still quite expensive.

My prediction is that is the next few months you will see 500whp stock turbo B58's roaming the streets.

The 700whp mark has already been broken.
Once more fueling mods are available we should see tuners pushing the engine to its limits.

Whether it surpasses the n54 status, time will tell.
I don't see why not. Given that the engine is now sitting in two camps, BMW and Toyota, aftermarket mods should rollout faster.

I gather from this thread some people have been experiencing issues with the b58.
Maybe we should start a common issues thread?

The newer ecu will always be more difficult to crack.
All the hurdles like fueling limitations are obviously build in by manufacturers to stop petrol heads like us messing with their warranties.
But as usual, they will always be cracked haha.
The M cars will get a new engine soon. The S55 is on its way out, and BMW will possibly use the B58 architecture ?
It would only make sense to have a basic platform. Most manufacturers are following this route.
And for that reason alone, I believe the B58 might have been more thought out than we know.

Its awesome on paper, Yes, I’ll agree. That was the reason I chose it over the N55 M2 when I bought mine. For a little more at the time I was offered a N55 M2.

I regret that decision. Would have been way happier with the N55, I had 2 previously.

There are known issues and failures on them locally and internationally. I personally know of at least 6 B48/B58 that share modules and parts that have failed.

But hey, what do I know, being my 10th BMW and this POS has convinced me never to own another, its must be a fantaistic engine.

Strange. Maybe just bad luck ? From my searching online there seems to be no serious common issues.

I see one or 2 posts where there is cylinder issues but the majority of feedback is positive. Every model will have a few lemons come off the production line.

What has happened to yours? I’m not really stressed due to motorplan etc, but I’d also be pissed off I had to constantly be taking the car in for something. 16k Kms on mine so far and all fine. I also chose this over the n55 m2 as I wanted a more practical daily. Fast car, but not the most exciting, m2 much more theatre
