Automotive slang in SA

So I'm trolling through Gumtree and a new one shows up.

WTF is a corolla "wet look" and a corolla "bubble"?

And I thought a BMW "Dolphin" was silly.

-----------

Phoencall-

Opperator---- "Good morning this is Outsurance"

Caller ----"Hi, how much is it to insure a wet look"

Opperator --- "I'm sorry???......"

People are so stupid sometimes when trying to give things "meaning" it doesn't always work so well. if you cannot read the name on the back of the car because you cannot read then rather shut up.

I'm not intending to be nasty, I'm just saying I think it's silly.

-----------

the wetlook/wedge is the 85-89 corolla, the slantfront is the box shape 81-84 corolla, the bubble shape is the 90-94 corolla

and no its not silly, its just an easier way of identifying the model amongst toyota guyz,

ask most people what a dolphin shape bmw is and they will refer to 92-98 e36, same as box shape 84-91 e30,

then ask someone what pre-lci and lci means and they will think wtf

i thought the slant front corolla was the "chisel shape" well at least thats what we call it hehehe

e46 pre face-lift - g-string
e46 facelift - chinese eyes

lol just adding my 2c :fencelook:

The most famous one is probably "gusheshe" :)

I've always been amused by the affectionate identifiers given to these "iconic" cars.

My dad has a "wedge" '85 Corolla and guys who work at the petrol station always want to buy it. They wanted to give me about 20k for my mint E30 (Nic_S knows that car), and are not half as enchanted by my E46 330i as they are by those two cars :=):

Why not just call it what it is? I don't see the point of using dumb names for describe models when the all have model numbers to describe them.

The 92-96 honda's were refered to as the "dinosaur" honda's, because when they were launched, the tv add had the cars drive in between 3 dinosaur skelitons with the song from SNAP playing, "I've got the power!" so thats why they called it the "Dinosaur" honda's.
Also the E36's were refered to as the "Dolphin" shape because the tv add had the guy stop next to the coast and the dolphins jumped out and spoke to the car, or him, cant really remember all the details, but from then it was refered to as the "Dolphin" shape. :)

BMW E30 = Box Shape
BMwW E36 = Dolphin Shape
BMW E46 Pre F/L = G String
BMW E46 F/L = Smiley Face

Theres also a Toyota Box shape, Honda Ballade Box Shape, Nissan Sentra Box Shape,

I think that the slangs are rather interesting. our slangs are unique to South Africa, as im sure other countries have their own slangs for their cars.
