ATT: Oil Nuts! [E39 M5 / TWS Oil Content]

Hey guys,

I've recently purchased an E39 M5 with 110 000km on the clock. I absolutely love the car and want to look after it as best I can.
I'm very anal about letting it warm-up properly before hooning it and I generally like to make sure that it's properly maintained etc.

Right. Onto the nitty-gritty of the topic: Oil.

I'm told that the car has been serviced only with Castrol TWS Motorsport oil since new, never any other oil. The problem with this, is that it's something close to R200 per litre.
The M5 takes about 8L of oil in a typical oil change. That works-out ridiculously expensive after a few oil changes, and that is money which can rather be spent elsewhere like brakes, tyres and decent service parts.

My question and debate, is this...
Can I substitute the TWS Motorsport oil for Castrol Edge or Castrol Edge Sport, obliviously staying within the 10W60 rating that the engine has become accustomed-to and has lived-with all it's life?
I have pulled a few White Papers and all three oils seem very similar, but I'm not an expert..

Your thoughts?

I use the castrol oil that says bmw on the bottle, 15w30 I think. when I first changed to that oil, there was a very noticable difference in my performance aswell, not sure why that is, but there definitely was.. hope that helps. btw, I think thats what you should be running.. its like a goldish bottle...

As said in the thread Freerider posted.

Liqui Moly Synthoil GT1 10W60 is ideal for your vehicle.

It is a high spec, race derived engine oil. Shell has a engine oil that is of similar spec but it is not designed for racing. I assure you the Liqui Moly oil is all I recommend even though I sell the Shell Oil too.

Hello SS

I replied in the other thread. (Still waiting for BMW).

My oil isnt longlife but neither is the Shell nor Castrol equivelants.

You will find though that being race spec it will be more shear stable which will increase the life of the oil. It also means that the oil wont break down when it is being abused.

Mike, do you guys do oil analysis / testing?

I'm very keen to try a newer and better oil, as I do believe that for a 1999-technology-based oil, TWS isn't worth it's crazily high price.
I like to change my oils every 7500km or so - and doing so with TWS is not cost effective.

Does your GT1 contain MoS2 ?

We can do oil analysis through Wearcheck.

If you want it can be done on your car and then we can finally put this debate to rest.

The Synthoil is a group 5 Ester. Its a man made base and therefore does not require Moly.

Hey guys

Just spoke to SS with regards to this oil.

He is going to use the oil in his M5 and if we have any Cape Town based M5 owners then I will personally pay for Oil analysis on the oil. I have this much trust in the effectiveness of this product.

I will also set up a group buy for those who want the oil. Standard price for a 5 Litre is: R495.14 Incl. VAT.

I will lower the price further if I can get two people to buy for their cars.
