Hi Guys

if anyone has an e39 540i... if you can please take some pictures of your crank sensor, the sensor on the gearboxes bellhousing... I will really appreciate it.

just trying to figure out if the machine shop drilled the sensor hole for the gearbox in the correct place...

Thanks a million !

nah, manual box.

I need acctual pictures. allready know what the box looks like lol. just, I'm pretty sure my sensor might be mounted incorrectly.

I think the most accurate way of telling if it’s in the correct position is to remove the crank sensor and have someone turn the engine and look through the hole till the home position passes, (the spot with the 2 missing teeth) then count the number of teeth that passes till the engine is on TDC.
I will have a look tomorrow at work it should be the same on my M5,, Will also take pics.

schweet ! .. yeah, M5 is the same ..
I thought about doing that, but then I still wouldn't be certain as to wether the sensor is mounted correctly.. as in, too high up, sothat it only catches half the tooth instead of the entire thing..

I connected my osciliscope to the sensor, and the signals are only about 1volt pulses, however, the frequency does change fine when the car is revved.. so I dunno. must be placement or the flywheel. one of those two things.

I don't think the flywheel will do that, and also if the angel af the sensor is out, (turning the sensor in the hole), it will also give a weak signal...

If I can find the time and will to lift my significantly heavy E39 540i significantly far off the ground tomorrow, I would be happy to take the pics you require, will even take the sensor off at TDC so you can see the teeth profile.

Is it a Hall or normal magnetic sensor? Hall sensors only monitor a change in magnetic flux between two points and require different measuring techniques.

Magnetic sensors will generate a voltage

Thanks Werries ! .. finally got a chance to measure everything today.. it seems like my sensor is 1-1.5mm offset vertically. but since it is such a small difference, I guess the only way to know if it is my bellhousing or flywheel is to take off the gearbox and fit the old auto gearbox's bellhousing and see if it still misfires... if it does then its the trigger ring on the flywheel..

didn't have energy to do that today, so will do it in the week.
