Another crank - no start

Hi guys.

So I got my E46 318i N42B20 a couple weeks ago. We test drove it 3 times before we bought the beauty and the only issue present was a slight hesitation at low RPM but we took the car and got a service kit for it (oil + filter, fuel pump + filter, air cleaner, ATF to change gearbox oil)

On the way to work with it the other day (before doing the service) the car cut out. No surge, stutter, death rattle or smoke. Just stone dead on a slight 30km/h right hand curve. All lights and gadgets work except the heater, previous owner blanked off the pipes at the solenoid for an unknown reason.

What I've done so far: replaced fuel pump & filters including oil and air, haven't changed ATF yet. Changed spark plugs. Had a guy who's worked on these before check the cam sensors and vacuum pipes. I've checked spark myself and checked fuel pressure on the rail - all good. Checked all fuses and relays. The engine cranks strong and it sounds like the engine wants to take every now and then but it doesn't. Logic says if it has spark and fuel it's a timing issue or the ECU is shouting stop for one reason or another. We're still waiting for delivery on a diagnostics cable and software.

Is there anything I can check myself that doesn't involve heavy mechanics that I haven't mentioned? I read a short message on a forum that mentioned the crankcase valve?

Preferably I would love to get this car up and running asap but I don't have the bucks to consult a mechanic right now, I just bought a car cash dammit!

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.:ty:

Thanks for the quick reply. I've read that if it's the crank sensor there won't be power at the fuel relay leading to no fuel pressure at the rail. Also the rev needle jumps without the car starting?

Is this correct or am I reading the wrong forums?

Also a quick link to a youtube vid showing the same

not 100% sure, my 318ti did the same thing a few times until one day she would not start.

Was the crank sensor, my dads 318 did the same.

I'll give it a whirl then thanks.

A known issue on the 318? Something about BMW 4 pots?

Anything else I should look out for?

Get the codes read, diagnostics would make your life easy, but from the sounds of it crank sensor went poof or is on its way out.

But then again its a n42b20 it could be a number of un-common things.

Off topic, I actually think this is the most common BMW engine on the road today, i could be way wrong, but it made its way into many 1,3,5, z and x1 models during its production.

Ok so I got my cable and managed to install the INPA software (what a bloody mission) and got the following errors: Hot film air mass meter and camshaft sensor inlet. I didn't get crankshaft sensor.

Any thoughts?

I also got a price from Auto Alpina on the crankshaft sensor - approx R1800
