Another brake question....

Vehicle is a 2009 e90 320i, Cape Town based

Front brakes are now due to be replaced according to the onboard computer.

I am pretty handy with the 'ole spanners so not scared to tackle this DIY,

Is it advisable?

Is it advisable to replace disks at the same time?

Any idea of the Agents charges

What make (pads/discs) should one use if going the DIY route?

Costs?

Any referals to an Indy who could the job?

I always do discs and pads together. not needed but i do.
BMW charged me R6.5k and i bought mine from Midas and i paid R2,4k

I done front discs and pads myself around mid last year. Original BMW parts. Costed 3.2k including sensor.
Definitely a DIY job this.

I have done this in December and the total cost of mine, front discs incl brake pads and sensor was R6K. DIY

All OEM
* Discs R3999 for set (had a horrible shudder on front as I hit the brakes)
* Pads R1700 for set (new discs, so new pads. Always replace in pairs with new discs)
* Sensor R250 (was pushed down my throat, BMW service there. My brakes was fine still good and sensor wasnt damaged but hey, BMW is always right)

If you still have enough meat on your discs just change the pads.

Its an easy DIY.

you don't have to change the discs every time you change the pads. Just inspect and see if they are cracked, it will be small hair line cracks. Do they have a big grove on the edge, do you feel a vibration when step on the break pedal while driving or feel as if the pedal is tapping your foot. does your steering wheel vibrate when you break. These are some of the questions you need to ask your self before replacing the disk. When you have the grove on the edge of the disk and you see that there is still a good thick metal left, just have them skimmed rather than replacing

Thanks Guys, DIY it is going to be, just need to decide which make of pads and possibly discs. Dics I will only know once I have the wheels off.

DIY did not happen as my bottle jack is to high to get under the car.

I took it to SupaQuick in Montague Gardens and got the most incredible service at a very reasonable price. Front pads, discs and sensor done.

Now my question;

Does the "handbrake" warning light automatically reset itself when a new sensor is fitted or is there a procedure to follow to reset it?

You have to reset the service light. You can do a it on your own, no tools needed
