Am I doing a dumb thing? F10 528 for an E92 M3

So the F10 just stands in the garage mostly, I drive it maybe once or twice a week. It's a brilliant car, but like others have found it's almost 'too smooth'. It lacks driver involvement, which is great if you want a really comfortable cruizer, but does take away from the immediacy you'll have in an M3. Granted, the car has a lot of power and it goes well but was never intended to be 'racy'.

The thing is, my car is pretty much spotless, it's got MP for another 3 years and it's only got 20k on the clock. It is a pleasure to drive, although it doesn't get the adrenalin going. Compared with my 320d, which is an animal after the tune, it does leave me a little wanting.

I've been itching for an M3 for some time, and initially looked at an E46. Thing is, I just can't help but wonder that as far as value for money is concerned, I'd be happier with an E92 rather. Initially I was going to keep the F10 and get the E46 later, but I just don't have enough parking for all the cars and frankly, I'll end up with a hell of a lot of debt that is hardly justified.

I thus have to pick between keeping the F10 or trade it in on an M3. There's quite a few E92 M3's out there that is in my 'budget', although these would be '09 cars with 70k km's on them. And this is the rub: Am I going to kick myself for moving from the relative comfort of an F10 and into a mistake of a car? My budget is around R450k for an E92.

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks,

If you not going to drive it often, then the M3 would be a better fit to "keep" compared to a 528.
You don't want a car you don't drive often to be that refined, you want your "weekend" car to be a bit of an animal.

Just my opinion.

i would imagine that if you do pick up a good M3 it would hold its value longer.

My heart uses M3 as an answer to almost any question :):)

Thanks,

From previous experience, a 5 series is not a car to be kept for long, they loose value too quickly.

Yes, the E9x M3 seems to be holding value well, however once the F8x M3/M4 prices start to drop, E9x will drop as well. So i wouldnt say its going to hold value for very long.

The main downfall, is Motorplan. You have 3 years on the F10, if you saying your budget is around R450k, you looking at a 08/09 and if you lucky a '10 E9x M3 with between 60 000km and 90 000km, if you lucky! So, in age, they will be out of plan or if extended have a year or so left. Mileage wise, you have very at best, 40 000km.

I would look at an F30 335i instead. 2013, less than 30 000km. There are a few available on Autotrader.

whats the point of the F10 if you not using it daily? deprecation alone make the M3 cheaper...

if you were using the F10 as a daily then there maybe some argument for it but the way you currently using it the M3 will be better

I would.

But I am not known to be sensible.

Thing is, a 5 series never holds value in the long run.

In 5 years from now, F10s will also be worth R50k just like the e60s now, whereas the M3 will depreciate slightly less.

I have a polo and a bike I commute with daily. The 335i stands in the garage just itching to be hammered on weekends. So my recommendation is. Buy the M and buy yourself a commuter that you can use during the week which must be light on fuel. And then on weekends. You have fun in the M. So sell everything else.. you will be happy this way.

In my opinion, the F10 will always be more comfortable than the M3, then again an M3 wasn't meant to be comfortable.

You will always be more excited and involved when it comes to driving an M3 as opposed to the super refined F10 super saloon.

In terms of value and price, my guesstimate would be that the M3 would hold more value than the F10 in years.

Just my 5c, based on opinion as I have owned neither.

If you specifically want an M3 then go for it. I am sure most people part with their money for the enjoyment factor. If you worried about how much you going to lose i.t.o maintenance costs and depreciation, then it's probably best to walk away from the idea.

Thanks gents.

I hear what say say in long term value - the M3 would be better. Also, the M3 is a lot more special than the F10.

Thing is, I do like the F10 still and I've got that feeling of apprehension in me for changing it out with what will essentially be an 'older' and potentially less 'reliable' car. And I've learnt to listen to hesitation when I feel it.

Here's a twist:

Sell the 320d.
Keep the 5er as a daily.
Buy an E46 CSL.

Neither are you :biglol:
