Am I crazy? E90 trade-in

Generally I find that the E90 diesels are really nice. Some years ago I had a 320d A LCI while my E90 was in for a service, and it was really a pleasure to drive. When I left SMG I noticed that it was hanging onto the lower gears longer than expected, and going up Plattekloof I planted my right foot a bit, thing took off! It was then that I saw that it was in DS mode. And clearly was being driven with a very heavy foot. Even with my somewhat spirited driving, I was able to get the 7.7 l/100 km long term average consumption (seemed like this had not been reset for a long time) down to 7.5 l/100 km. The LCI's newer engine and newer gearbox was really a good combination in my view. Only thing that I found was that DS mode was in most cases the way to drive - not for the extra performance as such, but my mechanical sympathy did not like it that the engine was being forced to run at such low revs when cold - in normal D mode it was trying to keep the revs down to something like 1200 rpm. For me that's lugging a cold engine! So put it back in DS mode and it was keeping the revs up to more reasonable revs for the cold engine. On the open road when cruising, then pop back to normal D mode. Basically, I was very impressed with it overall, especially as a daily.

Ok from experience I've owned a E90 325i LCi auto and fuel was killing me and having to drive like miss daisy to try and save. what's the use just for the sound track it does not make sense. I can tell you this though an f30 320d kicks its ass in all ways. the only way the 325i will win the 320d is from 200kmh up words and only by a bit maybe.

My advice get a E90 320d or an F30 320d and you wont regret it. your fuel cost will be cut in half atleast. Just remember I am talking from experience. I suggest just go and test drive an E90 and an F30 320d and come give us your review.

Ok, consider your options and then see if it is worth the extra debt for a slower car with slightly better fuel consumption, remember that if you hammer the 320d you will still be sitting at 10 - 11L / 100km (my friend has one and got it just 2 months ago, he still struggling to get the consumption down to the acceptable 8L mark, and he doesn't hammer it all the time, city traffic and both of their weight counting against him)

PROS
- if driving politely you will gain 4L more per 100km, meaning you will sit at around 6 - 8L / 100km
- Better fuel consumption

CONS
- you will have less power than the 325i, it will feel slow
- Turbo service around R14K needs to be added to the service plan
- Focus on start up and stops to allow the turbo to cool down properly
- same car (if not the X3)
- Extra debt and only R40k for your current 325i

Absolute hogwash :bin:

320d Lci will kill the 325i anyday, coast or reef 320d will kill it!

Turbo's aren't troublesome.

Your friends 320d is broken :blueCry:

:praise:

Haven't found any F30 320d touring's in my price range as of yet. E91 320d is looking like my best bet so far.

Okay guys so the search has continued. Had some issues but I'm back to looking.

I've been in touch with BMW Daly near JHB. They have a 320d available and are willing to settle my outstanding amount with the 325i, and will let me take the 320d without a deposit.

Firstly, is this a wise decision? It'll be an extra R500pm, or an extra R900 if I take the mechanical warranty. I know that fuel costs will drop significantly. I'm currently spending ~R2 000 per month on fuel, and the price of run flats are not in my favour.

My current pay period is 60 months, and I have 37 months left. BMW Daly is offering the vehicle over 72 months.

Is it wise to look into selling the car privately? What would my 2006 325i Individual with 247XXXkm get in a private sale?

I really would appreciate any help/advise here. Thanks Fanatics.

Year is 2006, just like my 325i. Mileage is 122300km.

Personally I would stick it out with the 325i.

I had a E91 325i and moved to a F30 320d for the exact same reason you are, fuel costs.

From what I can see, you do about 1500km per month (assuming 500km per tank (60 liters * ~R11.50 = R690), R690 * 3 = R2070 and that would equate to approximately 2 tanks of diesel (60 liters * ~R10.50 = R625) R625 * 2 = R1250. Assuming you'll get 700-800km per tank. So you save R750 on fuel costs. Which is basically equal to your new payments (incl warranty).

Also, you'll be getting into a 2nd hand car (of which you never really know the history, unless it's somebody you know's vehicle you are purchasing). If there's nothing seriously wrong with your current vehicle, I would keep it, that is if your main reason is fuel costs.

In terms of practicality regarding transporting your drums, obviously the X3 or E91 would be better. In all honesty every time I drive the F30, I can't help but miss the E91, even though the F30 is a nice car. It doesn't quite compare, maybe I'm just weird like that.

Think of it this way in a while you'll have the car paid off and if you still feel like it buy something more economical/practical and sell the 325i for a nice deposit or just keep it as a 2nd car.

Good luck with your decision!

After reading all of this , why does it seem to me that the OP is better off keeping his 325i then trying to get into another car because of fuel consumption ?

Seems more cost effective to keep your current car , It will also be paid off a lot sooner then the new one . The repayments are lower and you know the car better . From what I know about diesels , they do require more service intervals then a petrol .

Makes more sense to keep your current car .

No No keep the 325i you will be better off. Just stick it out. If it was a 320d like a 2010 model I would say go for it. Going for the same year model car and paying that amount more is a big No No:RedNo:

Look at the new term 72 months its a No No. You halfway on your current term. They wanna do you in.

Keep the 325i

Avoid the instant gratification, because you will be screwing yourself over in the long run. If your 325i wasn't financed, it would have been a difference story.

jissou I will take a 320d over 325 everyday and twice on mondays!
drove my 2005 from 128k km to 200k km trouble free. had software done and serviced every 10k km at average of R2800 at random mechie. thats total cost of maintenance at mechenaic. turbo serviced regularly? bah
I also believe the 320d is faster for al practical reasons but should loose at top end.
I took extra attermarker warranty and never needed it...am currently driving my f30 330d out of motorplan without a warranty.

but then...if you cant pay a car of in 3 years you shouldnt buy it. thats your situation summarized. stick it out with the 325

oh yes...my approach when my ass starts itching for a new car then I kod. its cheaper. did software in the past when I started to get tired of a car.

so a suggestion for you...do your exhaust and screw fuel consumption. build on your car' s strong points

Lol I'd love to mod the 325i, but the whole point is finding something more affordable for myself.

This car was my first car I've bought and I didn't think about fuel costs, tyre costs and parts costs etc.

I'm going to keep the 325i until I find something more recent and affordable.
