A lot to look out for...

Very special cars, here's what you should check out for your model:
> This model will have the E36 M3 Engine, have a look at the Vanos.
> Check underneath the boot covering for any tears in the metal, common with our cars.
> Have the Diff and Suspension properly checked out, these cars are known to be thrown around by so called enthusiast.
> It's rare, so you want to find one in decent enough condition or a condition good enough to make it decent.

Perhaps if you can provide some more detail or pics...i can help you further.

Tears in the metal?Caused by?Is it a major issue or easily repairable?

You're welcome

Yeah, some have seen tears in the metal at the rear due to some owners taking it too far with these tail happy beasts.
Which has caused tears for some models if not driven correctly.

Can be pricey, but haven't come across one in SA yet.

Alot in the States and US and the guys there say it can get expensive.

Hi 4cefed6, as a owner of one of there cars I agree with NEM3SIS (the 3 is silent).

Have your Vanos tested before you invest in seals, many times the Vanos systems are still fine.

Don't stress too much about the after market pipe, it will mostly be for sound.. So if it is stainless and you like the noise, just leave it be. Must be a good quality unit though.

Another thing on these M motors are the shims, tapping sound from the head.

I'll be in Durban next week from Tuesday if you would like me to join you for an inspection.

Regards

Herman

Cool bud, normally these beasts are relatively bullet proof considering the punishment they get. One of my friends still own his, as a daily driver, must have 200K on the clock by now, and this dude drives.. believe me. No Major issues I know of.

The only thing I always worry about is repair costs; it is not cheap fixing one of these engines. So maintenance is sooo very important.

Hi 4cefed6

I also own one, and those little cars are just a blast. Mine is on 173 000km, and still going strong. Things to look out for:

1. Make sure the engine doesn't make funny noises, it must have a smooth idle.
2. Vanos leaking oil, and also making a rattling noise.
3. The tears in the boot are mostly from overseas cars, haven't heard if local cases yet, but it's always good to check. (I drive mine hard including doing sideways once in a while, it can handle it.

After you get the car just make sure you replace the following:

1. Overhaul the whole cooling system, fan included.
2. All the fluids
3. Everything that is rubber in the suspension
4. The hoses connected to the oil separator.

Most of the mechanical parts are the same as the 4 door M3 so you won't struggle for parts.
