Hi all.

Read a few different posts on here regarding buying an older M5

I've found a 2007 M5 with 78,000kms on the clock.

Wanted to get people feedback on what to look out for when buying the car.

Also do any owners have an extended warranty? is there anything available?

I am in the process of buying a car.
I am financing it through WesBank and they offered a limited warranty for R8k once off. It is limited in the sense that if the engine goes, they will only cover R35k. I know there are also other companies that offer warranties that you pay monthly for. Similar types of per component limits exist.

Interesting, my finance is also in place through Wesbank, did this come up when you went to sign documents or at what stage?

Hey, Welcome to the forum

My father bought a E60 M5 the other day, and it's an awesome car, the sound is Amazing!

there are alot of options for an aftermarket warranty, you get ones for about R200 to R300 a month if you choose the monthly option but there are once off options as well

Welcome man!

The extended warranty is good for smaller things but when it comes to engine it wont help much.
Check the service history and see if a bearing change was done as this is the main thing you have to worry about with the V10, if you run bearings, its game over. You'll have to rebuild the engine. So I suggest as soon as you get it, you change the big end bearings and get your oil level sensor checked.

Out of interest, has anyone here ever taken a car to BMW for a full download which is then sent off to Germany to show how many launches it has had how its been driven etc.

Can it be done here in SA?

Just remember....that R35k will cover just the M badge on the engine cover...

If I rung BMW and gave them the VIN number would they be able to check this? Or would it show up in the service manual?

I would apprecaite it so much.

What do you need the VIN? Engine number?

Does anyone also have any recomended shops that can do the big end bearings, and what sort of money are we talking?

Hey buddy,

I need the car, or at the very least the ECU itself. All the data is stored on here and isn't accessible with dealer or diagnostic tools.

So looks like the previous owner is a member on here, so got a lot of inside information which is good :)

Going to have a look tomorrow.

Excellent!

Has anyone had the big end bearings done recently.

Seems as if Naickers had the clutch, discs and a few other bits done within the last 10,000km which is pleasing, just might want to get piece of mind and do the big end just to be safe.

Anyone had any experience on prices for this in JHB
