Good Evening Chaps,

Hope everyone is well,

So my SO 2016 X5 30d mileage around 148 xxx kms has decided to give us an issue with the front diff,

I seek some advice on whether its possible to repair the front diff, if so any recommendations on who to contact to have a proper repair done? or replace it which is rather expensive from BMW at around R40k,

Thanks in advance,

Sareshan

Start with getting some quotes to repair. I think you might reconsider buying new, once you realise turnaround time is slow with car standing unusable and the price probably not much less with little guarantee your issue will be resolved.

Any idea what caused the failure bud?

The F15 is a fairly new model and mileage is not too high as well.

I would check BMW scrapyards for a vehicle that's stripping and compare pricing to BMW to see if worth the risk of getting second hand.

Howsit,

The suspicion is failure due to the diff oil not being changed, which when the mechanic drained the oil out could see that its was old,

Whilst we busy with this, we will be doing full fluids on the remaining rear diff, gear box and transfer case.

from what we saw and previous ownership of BMW's, these mentioned above oils should be changed every 100k kms or thereabout,

we looking to see what's the best option currently between a repair or second hand replacement, before the last option of buying new.

Good luck - I mean it. I had my E71 40D front diff replaced earlier in the year by a 'local mechanic' at a bit less than half the price off of what BMW quoted me, maybe 35% off. Mine couldn't be fixed, there are no service kits for the diff. If you plan to keep the car for a while still then I second the suggestion for a 2nd hand one or buy a new one if you are unsure what you might find.

I must confess, my experience with my 'local mechanic' was not the best and in hindsight I probably should have forked out the money for a BMW replacement because I love my car and planned to drive it for at least a few more years, but now, I just want to get rid of it.
