Advice : E90 335i or F30 320i

Im leaning towards the e90 because its just such a looker.

If not the 335i than the 320d,,just waiting for motorplan reports and then I also want to know more about the warranty before I can decide.

If I extend the plan on the f30 it will make the car almost 100k more expensive than the 335i and 120k more than the 320d :flyfun: Unless they offer me an f30 with lower mileage I will more than likely go e90.

I had a 335i with 105000 KM.

Turbo's blew
Power steering pump seized.
Injectors gave in.
Fan belt snapped ripping out all pulleys X 2
Water pump seized.

I did have a troublesome car and without plan it can hurt your pocket.
Go for the one with more plan.

Damn dude, was your car built on the day after a long weekend...:biglol:

Also keep in mind both are Turbo Charged Petrol engines, i dont see one being more expensive out of plan as the other... I would get the 335i...

This is also true and being newer tech than the e90, I would think that the 335 will be a much cheaper fix and if I get a good warranty it may be just as good as a Mplan

As awesome as a 335i is you DONT want to own one without Motorplan!

320i is a great all rounder! go for it!

just put it into context

Golf 6 GTI or Golf 7 1.4 TSI
Old Focus ST or new Focus 1.6
Old Opel OPC or new Astra 1.6
Old Renault RS or new Renault 1.6
I can go on all day

Moral of the story, the F30 320i is going to be just another car in a year or so where the 335i is still going to be a legend a "dad look that's a 335i " and every time a 335i flies by you, your going to regret not choosing one when you had the chance ...ask me I know

Hey there, I'm just picking up on this and I have owned the E90 320D sportspack and now bought the F30 320D sportline a month back. I also thought about fuel consumption and the maintenance plan and have to ask you why not consider a diesel?

I know a lot of people will say not to go the tractor route but I drove from Cape Town to Namibia twice and also to Natu, Botswana as well as Livingstone in Zambia with my E90 and the consumption is amazing. Cape Town to Windhoek on a tank and a half! Also from Cape Town to Zambia, roundtrip via Windhoek, Nata, Livingstone, Victoria Falls and back again via Mahikeng border and through Kimberley back to Cape Town, totalling 6700km and only filled up 6.5 times, bear in mind I had to use 500ppm diesel in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

My nephew drives the 320i E90 and only gets 720km on 56ltr when and I get 1020km on 56ltr when driving the diesel. The other 4ltrs I always keep in reserve.

Maintenance plan is way more important on the diesel range cars because their parts are so expensive compared to the petrol engines, but you can save much easier and take the petrol engine BMW to a mechanic that won't charge you so much s with diesel engines. Also E90 parts are much easier to get for the 320i then with the 320d.

hope this helps!!

335 open road cruising at 120 to 130kph, not more because coisman is standing there radar in hand [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY], yields brilliant consumption, especially after a carbon clean. I've gone low as 6.5 at 130kph over a 60km highway drive. So cruising it's brilliant, but plant that foot down an you left with a huge smile on your face as you thrown into your seat with the wife shouting next to you.

The cars are nowhere near as troublesome as some people make them out to be. Before you make a decision, ask for a complete printout of its history to see if was looked after.

Because it's a 2010, it will have the n55 motor, which was released late 2009, so you got less stress. Take the 2 year plan they offering and walk away a really chappie. That's my advise.

If you the 320i route....speak to neo, he will guide you in unleashing a few ponies from that engine.

@ Vernon I have owned a tractor and I loved every moment of it, Its on the list bud and if I get a good deal I will take it if the 335i is out the question

@Firoze,,,,bud your car is hot, and I agree with everything you have said. I am waiting for the printout and if that is good then all systems go. Im getting the car for 45k less than trade and if I get a good aftermarket plan that covers the big stuff then I don't think it will be such a headache, plus I don't drive my cars hard unless absolutely necessary. During the week, it will do a round trip of no more than 10kms to the office, It wont even be warm enough to melt margarine let alone plant it.

@max, I drove both and as nice as the 320i is, the 335i put a smile on my dial that i've been missing since buying a bmw. I regretted selling my GTI every day until I drove the 335i and boy does it look good, one day hopefully even half as good as Firoze's car.

Based on your projected mileage you will be out of plan in the 335 in roughly 3 months (depending on your Durban trip etc) and on the 320i in a year.

So what you have to consider is 9 months motorplan worth an extra 70000 rand, for a car that albeit newer is an "entry" level in the range.
Or a older model but a high specced car.

Personally I would go for a higher specced older car.

Study those motorplan histories and draw up a pros and cons list.

Goodluck!

Nemo, i think you answered your own question. Use some of the cash you saving over the 320 and extend the plan to its max!

So I just got the MP CIA on the 335i and 320d.

The 320d has been struck off the list due to accident comments on the CIA report :nonono:

The 335i however, has had no failures in its lifespan to date. Normal servicing and maintainence. Brake pads and discs and that's it. The entire bill over 5 years amounts to R33k :flyfun: My GTI cost me a hell of a lot more than that in 2 years.

Below are the two Biggest costs aside from Brake discs.

F30's comment sheet is double the length of the 335i with R58k in under 2 years.

Just now waiting for find out what warranty they are going to offer me before I decide.

I think the same guy built our cars :thumbdo:

In the 9 months I have owned mine the following was done:
Gearbox
Water pump
Diff
Spark plugs
Battery
Door locks
Injectors
Camshafts
Vanos Solenoids
Oil leak around oil filter housing

MP expired end June and car has already cost me R6k in repairs. Cams, Solenoids and oil leak was out of MP but with a bit of "persuasion" BM covered parts for cams, Solenoids, oil leak and 50% of labour. Other 50% was for my pocket.

In spite of all of the above I still enjoy the car immensely. The car has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. You can easily potter around at under 2000rpm and in an instance unleash the beast. I think that is what I like best about the car. With my family in it I can drive it like 320. Alone and it becomes a toy.

I Think I fear the dealership more than the car itself.

I requested details from them yesterday at 9am and have not received a response yet :argh: its like they don't want to sell me a car.

Just got an quote on insurance on the 335i and boy am I happy :inlove:

Owned a few X35s and a few F30 320s.

IMO F30 320 is the one i would choose anyday and everyday for obvious reasons ranging from maintenance , fuel , comfort

Your heart will say 335i but only advise i can offer is to make a sensible decision. Longtime is what you need to look at

Having owned a few Diesels , my opinion. I will never touch a Diesel ever again based purely on the fact that the new generation of motors are now Petrol Turbo from BMW stable. Diesels are over-rated and out of plan one will pay massive amounts of money to maintain.

Cant see the MP pics but if a car has comments on it , stay away , stay away. Will repeat this a million times especially if hardware was changed. Based on what you saying stay away from the F30. Once again i cannot see what was changed but 58k is madness and I would never touch that car.

IMO

Unfair comparison on fuel consumption as the older generation E90 320s were non turbo and a lazy lump.

A fair comparison would be F30 320d vs F30 320i

Just my two cents worth
