This happened this morning, at the fault of the Volvo:

You will all be shocked if I tell you that that tiny impact is not economically viable to repair compared to the value of the car

I don't know what to do. Write off? If so, buy back and repair? Code 3? Take cash and get something else?

Car is still under finance.

No E39 should suffer this fate :(

Sheesh not cool man...:sorry:

I know what the bumpers for our cars costs its ridiculous...

You should try go the 3rd party route and claim against the volvos insurance, it will involve about a 6 week wait but you will get paid out in cash. You can source the parts at better prices and get your car repaired.

The Volvo openly admitted, in front of witnesses, that it was his fault. We both went to the cop station to report the accident etc where it clearly states he is at fault. The report will by submitted to insurance on both sides. My insurance company will definitely be claiming from his, so I'm personally not worried about the cost of the repair.

What bothers me is that, after the repair, will I be happy with the car? It now has an accident record which will affect my resale value, plus make it more difficult to sell if need be.

As said in PM, although the pricing is insane, that is a cosmetically damaged vehicle.

Your chassis is intact, its not a case of having to rip out the motor and change a shock tower or even worse a chassis leg, those cars never the same.

Yours is purely cosmetic.

Sorry to hear bud, such a neat example. I would also try and repair it privately but hope you come out all right in the end whatever happens.

Apparently there are cheap bumpers available, however no easily available fenders, headlights etc for the sport model. Also, my broker has told me that they won't pay out for pirate parts. Never heard of this, but who am I to say. My insurance has been good to me and so I trust them.

Dude, have the car repaired, end of story. You will be happy with the car when it comes back I swear. Screw the resale value, drive her 'till the wheels fall off!

Of course the insurance pays for pirate parts, they actually have incentives for it.

Santam for example, will pay out a larger markup up for pirate/second hand parts if parts sourced from their agents, this is fact, not fiction.

The problem is, with the E39, there are virtually no pirate parts available, and no self respecting person would use the "autostyle" fibre glass scrap.

However, good second hand is the way to go here, second hand parts of course is also very much endorsed by every major insurance company.

The only time you are not allowed to put in second hand components is if the vehicle is under warrentee,

That said, the insurance, or at least the good ones, do have a policy that they do not fit second hand safety equipment, nor pirate, so stuff like airbags, shocks, control arms ect, will be original and new.

My thought exactly.

I don't mind having the car repaired if it's done right, but... If the insurance decides to mark the car as written off and then offer to sell back to me, I will not, repeat WILL NOT take it back.

No ways in hell am I driving around in a car that can't be insured again.
