Are you a double stroke kind of guy peter ?
Oh and another thing, this really does not make sense.
That car is a big heavy 5 series...
We all know they implode when they get to 101,000km.....
How did this make it to 400k,
Engine and gearbox must have been replaced 6 times...

1. Gordon FTW for looking after the car so well...
2. E39 FTW!

Charlie Brown said:@ Alexander - does one do the vanos oil line as a preventative maintenece item or only if it is leaking / bulging ?

Sorry to hijack the thread. But I also want to do the vanos rattle and seals repair. I am however unable to find a impact tool in upington to loan to open up the vanos piston. Do you guys have a different method without the impact tool?
I have M54B30 motor with no vanos rattles as yet but wanted to do it as a precaution measure.

Do not attempt to do rattle without the special vice covers and an impact tool.
It is imperative that the vanos piston is not clamped into a vice unprotected as they will be damaged and that will be the end of the vanos unit.
You will equally need the cam locks to set the cams in the correct orientation.
I realise the Beisan do not mandate the use of cam setting tools however trust me it is insurance to use them.
In a nutshell you will need an impact tool to do rattle kit.
You may wish to consider your local exhaust shop as they use air impact tools.
Set it to the lowest setting.
Today we finished installing all new water hoses as well as a vent pipe.
The vent pipe required the throttle to be disconnected and a word of warning to those unsuspecting.
Do not disconnect the throttle plug without first disconnecting the battery as it is a monumental mountain to climb when you attempt to reset the throttle position.
I think it took us at least 1 hour to clear faults and reset it.
Apparently it requires the use of GT1 which is a reader used by the dealers.
Alexander got it right with INPA however by his own admission he does not know how so he is unlikely to replicate it.
Gordon was most supportive of my negligence even apologised for me cocking it up.......thanks Gordon.
Anyway fuel consumption is now in the order of 7L/100Km which is astounding for a 1,6 ton car with 400klicks on it.
