What size wheels do you have?
Also, are you (with the traction FULL off and not half off):
1. Depressing the clutch
2. Locking the steering either left or right
3. Building up the revs
4. LETTING THE CLUTCH GO AS FAST AS POSSIBLE
Note carefully on point 4 - if you feather the clutch, the car won't put down as much power in a sudden burst that will aid the breaking of traction.
Quick way to determine if it's the car or you, get your friend to try in your car and see whether he achieves a better result, then get him to show you what he did.
Side Note:
To all those lecturing this young guy about why he shouldn't spin his car - perhaps you should have a say on this matter only if you're paying for his clutch, tyres, etc. it's his car, his money, let him do as he wishes...
