A Buckled RIM

Why would the dealer give you sh*t about changing to different tyres?
Do you have to run their spec tyres?
I just bought a set of semi slick bridgestones for the rear, hope they dont give me issues.

They want you to support their tyre suppliers, namely, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Michelin and Pirelli - they have a star on the sidewall to indicate that they are BMW Approved tyres. And this counts for RFT's and non-RFT's. So although the Hankook RFT's are within spec and probably better than the majority of these big brand named tyres, no star, not approved! Well this is what I have to find out for myself...

How much do the RFT Hankooks cost???

The normal Non RFT Hankooks are R1270 each for 225/40/18's

Ah, but there is the problem with the Hankook RFT's locally - only available in 17" size, I don't even think they have the 255/40/17 for narrow/wides. But at the time when I bought these tyres, the 17" Ventus V12 EVO's were literally R50 cheaper than the 17" Ventus S1 EVO RFT's - seem to remember paying R1450 per tyre!!

Thats the problem with runflats and potholes, the tires are so hard and all the force gets absorbed by the mags which are strengthened but not enough for joburg roads.

Yip semi's daily. They are bit more noisy, mostly a whine at higher speeds but the grip is insane!

OK, heres the update.

I have replaced the rim, but have the old one for sale for R500.

The rim face is undamaged and the rim is in mint condition with no curb rash or scrapes, except for the buckle of course which is on the inside.

It will cost R350-R450 to repair. It will make a nice spare. Rim is 16".

I will post up some pics as soon as i can, so you can tell if its worth your while.

PM me if you are interested.

OK, theres more to this saga......... :thumbdo:

The new mag was fitted all was well. Friday I leave home to take the wife to the movies. on the way there, i feel a bumping noise. I pullover like 1 km from my house and notice nothing.

Thinking that the pressure must be low, I go to the nearest garage to check pressure, only to notice a :argh: RIVET in my front right tyre. 30 mins later, tyre is plugged and I am on my way.

Then on Monday, on my way home from work, I notice a bit of a rough drive, with mild vibration on the steering. I stop at the garage thinking it needs pressure, check all tyres and top up accordingly. Get on my way, and still feel it. Thought to myself, needs balancing and alignment.

Then yesterday on my way to work, it gets worse, pullover, check tyres, all looks well.

Then on my way home, I can feel the car vibrating like crazy. Stop at the garage and the front left tyre pressure is very low. Top it up, and get home.

Puzzled, I exit the car, wondering why the ride is so rought, why the front left lost pressure, when it was the front right that had the puncture.

I stand there for 5 minutes starign at the tyre...........then...............
WHERE THE HECK ARE 3 OF MY WHEEL NUTS (Including 1 lock nut)?

Check the 2 that are on, and they are just finger tight?! WTF?

Nobody touched the tyre or rim. the back left rim was repalced with a new one. Its beyond me. Ofcourse the 3 nuts are nowhere to be seen.

Worst case scenario, I had driven the car 40kms in total and at some point 3 nuts came loose and fell off somewhere.

Check all teh other nuts on the car and guess what?!.........almost all of them were loose.

Leave the car parked exactly where it is, not wanting to warp the rotor/drum. This morning at 6am I drive the wifes car to BMW forsdicks and buy myself 1 regular nut and 1 lock nut with the code for my car.

Total cost R316.57 including VAT

Still short of 1 nut, as they only had stock of 1. SA said its fine to drive it short distances with 1 nut missing. I jack up the car, remove the tyre, everything looks okay. cant tell for certain iof the rotor is warped but notice no visible signs of damage. Fit the rim back on, retighten every nut on all 4 wheels and drive to Sandton Auto. They dont have 1 nut in stock, have to order and will deliver top me later this afternoon.

:flyfun:

OK, any idea if this ordinarily? Can teh nuts just start to loosen over time. What other damage am I looking at. How bad will the balancing and alignment have become since the car was driven with 2 nuts holding a tyre in place (loosley)?

Comments, ideas?

I am still shocked at the whole escapade. Will take the car into BMW latrer this afternoon and have them put it on the lift to inspect suspension components.

you lucky the wheel did not fall off...

when last did you have the wheels off...
seems to me someone forgot to tighten them...

you will have to see if any damage was caused, hopefully there is none...

Yep, I know. When i realised that there were only 2 lightly tightened nuts holding the front wheel in place I was amazed at how God kept me safe.

The rim could have come off anytime, planting my rotor onto the tar and who knows what could have happened.

Hopefully, when it gets checked all will be okay.

Any idea which scrapyard I can get a set of wheel nuts and maybe a set of lock nuts with the adaptor?

After this event, I would like to have a set kept spare. Just in case you know. Paid the dealer prices just out of necessity so I could get to work.

i would not get wheel nuts from a SY because when they old they tend to snap real easy...

rather get a few new ones im sure there are decent after market ones around...

this is not something that should ever happen again thou so im not sure you should bother...

i would go back to the last place that took the wheels off and tell them about what happened so hopefully it wont happen again...

Thats hectic, glad the wheel did not come of. You can try these guys MD Motors 011 887 5314, they are just over Grayston in Wynberg.

That's hectic, glad you are ok and nothing bad happened.

No - wheel nuts are unlikely to come loose and just fall off, odds are those three were missing from the start. (Whomever took them out....)

Unless a wheel came physically off, there will be no lasting damage from this episode, just remove the wheels and do a visual inspection, if nothing looks chewed up it will be fine. The wheel, rotor, hub are incredibly strong items.

You really need to go back to the last place that worked on it and raise a stink of note. Even if it was not them that left items loose any half decent wheel shop checks all four wheels anyway as a matter of course.

Somebody out there owes you some cash for new wheel bolts - Hunt the culprit down, the next victim could land up dead from this lazyness.

Sounds more like theft to me :thumbdo: i've heard 3 cases of this already

thats what i thought at 1st, but why would they loosen all the bolts 1st... i would think they want to take a wheel as quick as they can in case someone disturbs them... then least they have one wheel...

I also considered the possibility that it might have been a theft attempt, but then, why not remove all 5 nuts and take the rim. Also, they would have to have the right code adaptor for my car . which is unlikely.

The only tyre that has been worked on recently is the back left, where the RIM was replaced. Other than that, nope.

So I have no idea how those three nuts went jolling somewhere and the other 2 were loose.

Also, when i checked all the rest, they were all slightly loose.

Any idea if I can take teh car to a TWT or the likes and have them tighten it to spec - 88lb/ft?

Sandton CBD.

I just want to make sure that this cant happen again.

I called BMW Sandton, but they are full of :yuck:

I wanted them to put the car on lifts and check suspension components, just to make sure everything is okay.
