Well for an update..
Picked up the car on Monday 18th for the drive home. First off I was told by Dave to swap out the gearbox cable. When I swapped out engines I transferred the gearboxes too, I then got a problem that the selector on the gearbox were on different sides. so I had a longer cable made. The 750 gearbox then gave issues at the mechanic as it wouldn't mate correctly with the gearbox computer in the 850.So we swapped out the 850 box back into the 850. This resulted in the cable not being ideal length, However with the original cable back in all is now working.
Driving it back from JHB in traffic my heart stopped, smoke..lots OF IT..... it would only billow smoke while standing still , on pull away. gearchanges and driving it didnt smoke. I then realized this must be all the old oil and crap the other engine dumped into the exhaust, by the time I got back Vereeniging smoke was much less and after a few drives around in the last couple of days its all gone.. burnt off eventually.
When I initially bought the car I had a noise from the rear left wheel. When I installed new discs and pads I noticed the clips holding the shoes were too long. I replaced them with the correct clips and the rattling noise was gone, however a new worse noise appeared. I started investigating on tuesday night and found rear left shock mount is broken, causing the shock to rattle around. This is a common problem on 850's and BMW actually have a repair shock tower that gets welded in. However I was warned that this cant be used if 18" wheels are fitted as they will rub against the new shock tower. Another fix is strengthening plates which I have had laser cut and now problem is cured.
When I removed the shock I immediately knew I was in for new ones, both are shot to hell. So ordered replacement Bilstein Sports B6 units yesterday morning from Incomex, pricey but worth it, fitted yesterday afternoon. What a difference they make.
Still exhaust to go and Hoodlining and some smaller items and a spray job when i have money, but is starting to get there, although this car has cost me a fortune already I think its going to make up in the enjoyment of driving it. Will probably never get my money back, but I own an Iconic BMW and it puts a smile on my wife's face.
She will be on the Stonehaven Run with her car in MAY and already she cant wait.
