850 back on the road

Well for an update..

Picked up the car on Monday 18th for the drive home. First off I was told by Dave to swap out the gearbox cable. When I swapped out engines I transferred the gearboxes too, I then got a problem that the selector on the gearbox were on different sides. so I had a longer cable made. The 750 gearbox then gave issues at the mechanic as it wouldn't mate correctly with the gearbox computer in the 850.So we swapped out the 850 box back into the 850. This resulted in the cable not being ideal length, However with the original cable back in all is now working.

Driving it back from JHB in traffic my heart stopped, smoke..lots OF IT..... it would only billow smoke while standing still , on pull away. gearchanges and driving it didnt smoke. I then realized this must be all the old oil and crap the other engine dumped into the exhaust, by the time I got back Vereeniging smoke was much less and after a few drives around in the last couple of days its all gone.. burnt off eventually.

When I initially bought the car I had a noise from the rear left wheel. When I installed new discs and pads I noticed the clips holding the shoes were too long. I replaced them with the correct clips and the rattling noise was gone, however a new worse noise appeared. I started investigating on tuesday night and found rear left shock mount is broken, causing the shock to rattle around. This is a common problem on 850's and BMW actually have a repair shock tower that gets welded in. However I was warned that this cant be used if 18" wheels are fitted as they will rub against the new shock tower. Another fix is strengthening plates which I have had laser cut and now problem is cured.

When I removed the shock I immediately knew I was in for new ones, both are shot to hell. So ordered replacement Bilstein Sports B6 units yesterday morning from Incomex, pricey but worth it, fitted yesterday afternoon. What a difference they make.

Still exhaust to go and Hoodlining and some smaller items and a spray job when i have money, but is starting to get there, although this car has cost me a fortune already I think its going to make up in the enjoyment of driving it. Will probably never get my money back, but I own an Iconic BMW and it puts a smile on my wife's face.

She will be on the Stonehaven Run with her car in MAY and already she cant wait.

Little bit of work yesterday and a clean, Thought I would put up some pics.

Got radio and shuttle all working yesterday. The previous owner cut the harnesses and fitted a cheapie radio and amp.. douche bag.

I found a radio at the scrappers, got the code off the internet. Next figured out which wires at the back come from the radio for speakers. Then figure out which wires were speaker wires and where positioned in the car. Wrote down all the colour codes and viola. Radio works, speakers all working, shuttle works and the tape-deck.

I skipped using an amp for now as I havent found one as yet, however a Becker specialist told me the amp was never needed as the deck pushes out 25rms per channel. The amp is actually not a 'real' amp in the true sense of the word as it only splits and refines the sound.

Next its off to remove the shit exhaust and install a good quality unit. Also exhaust tips are horrible and the point wrong and arent centred.

LOL Jaydrft....

I have toyed of the idea, but my wife said it will just remind us everyday when we sit at the table of the heartache and money.. rather enjoy a coffee after driving the 850 somewhere...

I am thinking of parting it or keeping and when have some spare cash to resleeve, new pistons and build a monster engine.. will see. However will consider offers on the engine...Its quite a chunk of money lying there

Cant find a stock exhaust and at 42k from BMW i fainted in their parts dept..

I am taking it to my local guy, he has 30+ years experience, building exhausts, headers ect. Well known and worked with some of the old racing legends like Vianna.

Let him see what he can salvage and do for me..he has built my 530 exhaust, 325 and others. pricey but quality work.

No interior pics yet.. still needs a major clean-up, leather work and so forth. Will post pics of before and after..when done

Thanks for the kind words guys..

Update.

I got my OBC to work much better at 95% screen. 100 TIMES better than it was. E36 is not compatible.

I decided to strip , roof lining, sunroof, A-pillar and C-pillar panels to clean the items. Removing the cloth and washing just revealed alot of dirt and water was stained yellow/orange. I suspect nicotine stains. So I am going to rather replace all the material. Off to my upholsterer to look for a matching material.

Sunroof also cleaned and re-greased for a nice operation.
