Currently Looking into buying a 2002 745i with around 141000km on the clock, both the interior and exterioir has had some neglect and once started the OBC comes up with the following messages, Suspension failure, brake repair.Could someone let me know what the repair costs are for something like this, and also if the price of R140K is in line?

The price is in line for the 2002 and 2003 7-series with serious underlying problems. Those year models had some major electronic flaws as well as some pipe problems which (apparently) requires an engine pull to repair.

I also looked at those and at that price the amount of car that you get for that money is the bargain of the year, but that might come to bite you a year down the line.

If it's brakes, it might be less than R5k for disks, pads etc, but if you need to swap out some suspension parts...eish...

I woulod avoid the 2002 to 2004 E65's...

As much as I love them, up to 2004 the E65 had oodles of electronic gremlins and the car was not completly debugged yet. Also there are very few people that can actually work on that car, so expect your back yard mechanic to break it more then he fixes it.

As for the suspension error, you will have to put that car on diagnostics to further figure it out, there could be a ton of things.

If you like the E65, I did a lot of research on it at the time, and the most reliable is the 730d from 2004 onwards, and I will start looking there. Perhaps a bit more money, but if you wait some more the prices will come down.

140k is a good price, but if you are going to be using BMW to do the repairs, that car is going to cost you.

Also, its not a E46 where you can pick up interior/body parts at every scrap yard, spares are expensive.

I dont want to put you off the E65 cause they are purely awesome motor vehicles, and I would buy another in a heartbeat... just maybe avoid that 02' 745

Thanks for the replies, I will look out for alternatives, and also have the car evaluated by BMW, as for a price to bring it into better state.

There isnt much that will put me off the Car, but dont want to be stuck with a lemon.

It is either buy a second hand BMW 3,5 or 7, or a cheapie to drive from new. Would rather be driving the BMW.

e38 7 series is like windows XP .. works perfectly to this day, runs faster than vista on the same hardware.
E65 7 series is like windows Vista, kak at first, but they fixed it abit later then it was ok, slower than xp but MUCH more luxury
F01 7 series is like windows 7, ... and on the 7'th day, everything was good.

I wouldn't buy it either... rather get a newer model bro. . or a5 series maybe

it all depends on budget.

My dad picked up a 2006 525i MSport pack, 76000Km, Motorplan, in good condition, with lots of extras (No sat Nav though :() for R250k

Shop around & you will find something good.

For R140K you could get a pretty decent E46 330i I would say..

Andrewbuch, I dont like to be too restrictive on the budget, as we all know we will typically find it if we really want it......to a point.

As for the analagy clutchplate, I work in IT, wish I could find one of the Dos 3.1 versions of a 7, could be really nice, and I could still work on it myself.

If anyone knows of a decent 5 or 7 going for a good price would be happy to view.

Cool no problem..

I would say, stick to cars with full service history, preferably with a dealer or a well known independent mechanic.

Motorplan is also great to have, unless you want to mod.

My dad had to have the rear shocks on the 525i replaced after having the car for 2 days, and it ended up costing R11k but cost us nothing cause of motorplan.

Shop around mate. Today, after a long look around, I finally bought one of the last-to-be-made E46's.

2005 330d with 75000 on the clock. R160K, 1 owner AS NEW. Trust me. Unbelievable torque. Oh and hello by the way..

That really is not a bad price... I would look at it,

Although the E65 is cooler then the E60, but a very decent car none the less, and the KM's are low.
