6th Gear WOT - Limp Mode!!

Hi Guys,

Tried searching the forum on this topic but couldn't find anything. Excuse me if I missed it.

Last night had the car in Manual mode on the highway and was in 6th gear when I came up to some traffic. As the traffic cleared, I proceeded to accelerate without changing down after a few seconds the car went into limp mode!!:thumbdo:

Pulled off, switched her off and on again, and all was well.

The JB4 was set on Map 5 at the time. Didn't have a chance to hook up the laptop to check for codes. Will do that tonight.

Anybody body else experience something like this? Is it a cause of major concern??

sounds like you need more octane... car is probably detonating under those conditions...

as for fixing the problem you have 3 options:

run a more conservative map (dont know the JB4 well im sure twins can advise )
use octane boost (I have options for you)
or
dont go wide throttle at low RPM

I had the same happen to me but was on map1 at the reef.. On map5 I havent had the same issue.

i have that if I am in the wrong gear. its so very very important never to do wot when you are in the wrong gear. 9/10 it will limp. if you going to do a wot then keep your revs up. higher octane will also help but i still avoid the situation altogether.

If it were my car i would run octane boost because not only will it help with the detonation problem but it will also give more performance allowing the car to perform at maximum...

obviously cost will be a factor

I would also look at water injection as another option, but this adds to things you have to take off before servicing :yuck:

I cant see what a wrong gear or fuel will make a difference ! - if there is a fault in the map it will do that. I dont believe every car is the same - and maps should be designed for each and every car. I have tried loads of different maps for my bike and found the best is to get it dyno ed and map set for it, now no issues.

MikeR I agree with you... the map is too aggressive for the fuel thats why the problem is there... so its ether fix the fuel or run a less aggressive map...

the fact of the matter is if your revs are low and in the wrong gear, the car will limp 9/10 times. yes it boils down to octane, but its more prone to limp mode if you dont keep the revs up. even in stock mode the car doesnt seem comfortable when flooring it in the wrong gear.

1st prize, increase octane
2nd prize, follow necessary precautions (even with OB)

you got an x35i? they are temperamental at times. you need to play nicely with them

Strange experience. Cant be anything to do with fuel or map. Sounds like 6th gear when you should be in first or second gear. Not enough oemph to give you power especially if you tried to go WOT and car probably kicked down to 1st gear while you expected it be in 3rd...:dunno:

Mo, you dont need a laptop to check for codes. You can just use your steering wheel controls. PM me.

being in the wrong gear when planting my foot was probably the first thing i learnt to avoid when i first tuned my car. was on the freeway and tried to nip in front of another car approaching in the fast lane. i knew with the power i had i would easily manage it. put my foot down and nothing. no power no noise just nothing. foot flat and my car decelerating. wtf? i thought i had broken my car. was so used to an instant kick in the back when i planted my foot. did some reading and realised what had happened. never flatten the pedal in the wrong gear especially when your car has sw and running our wonderful fuel.

I phoned lyndhurst on friday and asked them about the pinging. They said alot of oaks phoned this week around this with the heat moving up. He said its fuel. Apparently we only supposed to use BP ULP95.

Had a very similar issue to this, but with the Procede though. Kept going into limp only in 6th, especially when accelerating from low rpms, without changing down. Turned out the motor was running too rich for Gauteng's thin air as the US maps are set richer for sea level and essentially over fuel at our alltitude, apparently this is more pronounced in 6th . After speaking to Shiv I manually adjusted the fuel trims on a custom map and all was then perfectly fine. Have you logged the car or checked for any codes? If low octane fuel is the problem you will quickly see dips from the DME pulling timing, or if you have more serious detonation issues you should see the "super knock" glow ignition codes i.e. 30F1/30F2 in the BT cable format or codes 12529/12530 in decimal format.
