Injectors before and after
Cylinder head back plate with the special oil seal washer
To change the back plate one needs to drop the engine off the engine mountings and loosen and tighten bolts with quarter turns and then pray that they have not used silicone on the gasket.
Unfortunately my prayers went unanswered and the gasket was plastered with silicone which was not entirely unexpected given the rest of the of the engine
Thermostat housing soaking overnight to clear the gunk they had used to seal the thermostat cover.
Cleaned
Worn rocker shafts and eccentrics is the next challenge that faced us when setting valve clearances.
We were tempted to go under size however the risk of damage to the valve train made us stay in spec.
Motor is still noisy but thanfully not as much as when it came in.
Paul will need to seriously contemplate on his navel as to whether he goes the route of a head overhaul as it is likely to be eye watering expensive.
I just wanted to add as well as reinforce our earlier observation that although the car had been serviced the quality of work that it was exposed to they might as well have not done anything.

Car was taken yesterday and is on its way back today as there is hesitation at 3000rpm as well as oil burn from either valve cover or rear head cover or the excess oil which was washed off being burned.
What we did notice is that although the engine was rebuilt some time back they seem to have re used old gaskets and just applied gasket sealer on them.
I realise that gaskets are expensive but not as expensive as re doing a job due to oil leaks.
The inlet manifold air tubes will need to be sent to the engineers to machine the glue they used to seal the gaskets.
I shall post a pic of them later.
We had to borrow a set of air tubes to get the car going as our engineers are fully booked for the next 2 weeks to attend to a small but tedious job such as machining the individual tubes.
We shall see.

As soon as budget allows there are a few more items that require replacement such as the booster vacuum hoses,engine mountings gear lever worn parts as well as power steering system shocks etc.
Obviously patience becomes a prerequisite.
btw an update on the oil burn it turns out that the cylinder head back plate is leaking so we shall have another go at it this time with lots of glue cement plaster sand and silicone.
I am so peed off right now.

So I went past Axis this morning to give it a drive after the hesitation had been sorted. The car pulls 100x better then it ever did, smoother faster and sounding like a true BMW (well we are getting there).:rollsmile:
The guys have done an amazing job on locating all the issues in hoses. I cant wait to get it home! But the bug has bitten and now I want everything back to 100%, My budget doesn't feel the same!

Ok cool, I just wanted to know if you had picked up a gearbox oil seal leak on yours? I have one,which means the box has to be dropped out :thumbdo: which I don't particularly wanna do.

Just very glad your's is a lot better than it was. It's cool that people still actually care enough to get these graceful old ladies back on the road after they have been badly treated. So kudos to you and a1ex!

To order from BMW you will wait for the part to come in.
I went to Hydraulic Design Services in Stryjdom Park and bought 2 meters of high temp. vacuum hose for some R280 (R140p.m.) and installed it.
If you route the hose correctly you will require roughly 1.5m however he only sells in meter lengths.
I guess it is one of the things that needs to be correct for the car to perform correctly.
