635 csi Major Work

To set the background Paul bought the car roughly one year ago with some 430 000Km.

The car has had all services done by an unsympathetic mechanic and Paul has had one or two bad experiences with among others a dealer.

The car is a May 1980 production with the big rear spoiler which in itself is rare.

Paul and Alexander (Lysis) spoke and it was arranged that the car come in for a look over.

To summarise the car is in appropriate condition for the age and Ks traveled.
Although all services were done the quality of work was severally lacking and parts were canibalised and put on the car.

The motor was recently overhauled and the engine pulls respectably given that it has enough vacuum leaks to bring any modern day car to a dead stop.

It equally is leaking oil at a prodigious rate.

We started work on it on Saturday by giving it an engine bay clean prior to bringing it for the work to begin.

We are going to do a major service and attend to the fuel injection system as well as inlet manifold and carburetor.
Also set tappet clearances and replace the eccentrics that have flat spotted.

As this is an engine that I cut my teeth on(and having owned a few 528 and 535s) I think I have commandeered the project as I get immense pleasure working on what is by all accounts a "supercar" engine for its day.
If I am not mistaken the 535 was good for 7,2 secs 0-100 back in '80-'81.
Paul is equally committed to getting the car to a good condition which makes this project that much more interesting as he absolutely loves the car.

As a footnote my son has never before experienced so many vacuum leaks on a car and was absolutely amazed that the car had inlet manifold leaks injector leaks from missing rubbers oil leaks from the tappet cover a clogged air filter injector plugs that are broken and were not making good contact and it was still driving albeit with fuel consumption equal to a V12.

:fencelook:

I assume a grease service + points and condenser will be in order

I also saw that, it has both fuel injection and a carburetor. :fencelook:

Interesting......I know the original 628 was actually a carb car.....

The 635 CSi cannot decide if it is fuel injected or if it has a Accelerator pedal. :dunno:

Whilst looking at OEM I noticed the carburetor heading and out of curiosity had a look at it.

I then thought this is going to be a good one for the forum guys so called it a carb

I'm very keen to see how you guys get along with this rebuild. Think I can take some notes from what you guys do.

Spot the missing oil rail banjo bolt which was found among the valves with the aluminium washer which was too thin

The famous carburetor

How is this for badly seated injectors
All but one had cracked ,broken rubber O rings and they were loose

Head after cleaning for new gaskets.

Inlet manifold being cleaned.

Next set of pics will be the assembly of the various components, including the "carburetor".
