Dropped off the 540 this morning for an oil and filter change on the auto gearbox. Car was whining on the way to my office. After I left the office to drop her off at Triangle Transmissions, the whine was gone.

Told them to not do anything more than what I requested, and If they find anything else wrong, to let it be and I will come fetch the car.

Will keep you guys posted.

Could be, but I have a definite gearbox issue on the car that is taking priority.

I am so keen to hear if it made a difference.

I can only hope and cross my fingers I was right about it getting air in the system.

Sorry to keep you waiting guys. baby wanted my attention.

well the short answer is... Yes. Yes, the oil and filter change shut the trap on that whiney gearbox. well so far anyway. I picked her up, and drove at least 10km home, and all is quiet.

Hope it stays that way.

Yep methinks the level was low.

I would be surprised if it wasn't that, trust me if the whine was mechanical, nothing would shut it up.

Cool, hope it sorted for you Jandre

If it's still quiet after a week, remind youself to go and bitch slap all those who told you to get a new transmission.

Hey all. Yeah all I heard on my way home was the sound of 5fm and a rumbling V8.

I have thus far spent R3 100,00 to service the engine, cooling system and get the gearbox up and running.

Not bad me thinks.

Who says you have to spend huge money?

A bit of patience, good advice from several sources, and you can enjoy.

I'll never forget the dirt cheap V6 Alfa I once bought with a blown engine. One set of spark plugs and all was well, boy was I happy.

Now that it sounds decent, I can even take it for a drive down to the diner tomorrow night.

Now it is time to start with the interior and the rest of the paint renovation.

I have to applaud everyone who has helped me and assisted me with info, advice, interior etc. You guys (and gals) rock!

It's still a very long road, but we have overcome a big hurdle today (Touch wood)

Me excited now.

Oh yeah, by the way... The oil in the gearbox was still pretty decent, with very little sludge. The filter however was a totally different story.

Haha. No not yet. Yesterday in peak hour Cape Town traffic (similar to a Sunday afternoon drive in Gauteng), I wasn't really keen to scream around at 6000rpm inbetween cars.

By my calculations, I will have:
1) Bought a 540i
2) Serviced engine, coolant and gearbox
3) New interior
4) Valet, polish
5) Maybe even respray the entire left side
6) Registration and licensing

All for less than R22 000.00

Proves my point right there... BEST bang for buck out there.... :)

I have spent to date... something like

Car 13,500
Gearbox oil 2k
Manual conversion 10k (with new clutch)
Oils 1k
Brakes 4k (stupid me)
Wheels + tires 6k
Various bits 2k

38k.

With the biggest being the 10k box and 6k wheels, those were mods they dont count as R&M

And a spare gearbox to sell one day to someone that needs it.

A toyota Conquest 160 will cost you 40k
