I am considering buying a 2001 530d, Auto.

Lots of car for little money, full franchise service history.

What goes wrong with these cars. Will use it as daily commute as I am doing high mileage, +/- 4000 km per month.

Another E39 lover looking for a diesel

:flyfun:

Oh right, useful input.... :fencelook:

Well, the auto boxes are known for being unreliable and failing at some stage, as the engine produces 20Nm more than the gearbox can handle. However, I have never experienced a problem with my auto as yet, and I have software on the car.

Swirl flaps (Google it) need to be removed as they are known to become brittle, and get sucked into the engine, causing major damage. This can be prevented by removing them, with not much change.

Shocks are expensive, tyres are expensive :fencelook:

BUT...

You look after her, she will look after you. Perfect car for long distance travelling. Light on fuel, plenty power and so much comfort :inlove::thumbs:

One of the best looking BMW's out there, especially if you can find one in M-sport

Solid build

Great value for money, as you said. Lots of car for little money

Safe

Uhhhmmmmmm........

I too own an E39 530d (2001)

bought in 2007 at about 125000 km's...now on 235000 km's

in that time....daily drive
1) Town driving consumption 10.4 l/100km
2) Replaced battery
3)Replaced tyres
4)Replaced thermostat for EGR cooling (cracked and leaking)
5)Replaced cam-shaft sensor (starting issues about 4 years ago)
6)Replaced a few globes (burnt out headlights/stop lights etc)

thats it....it is truly an "old-faithfull" too me

Hehe you guys are awesome  E39 is one of my all time favs, very solidly built cars last of the good ones in my opinion too..

I used to clock about 4/5k 2 years ago now it's at least half that, if it's open roads then it's better traffic is the real car killer IMO.. as always like Chef mentioned.. if you find a good one and do the preventative and regular maintenance she will look after you.. Happy hunting

I am a Mercedes enthusiast man whose daily drive is a BMW 530d (E39 and E60)

IMHO, my 2001 E39 530d Auto (Exclusive Pack) is one of the best decisions that I have ever made in life.

Issues: Injectors, Failed secondary fuel pump, lcm, turbo, thermostat, water hoses, expansion tank, fan resistor, battery, some globes. Now I have a lazy a/c compressor bearing.

Strengths: An astounding car with plenty of torque (still have a speed camera photo of a trailer - being towed by my E39 - clocked at 187 km/h - This was in 2003.). Excellent ergonomics,, convenience features, luxury, innovation. The E39's (especially the 530d) were streets ahead of the competition

I going on the assumption that the E39 3.0ds are the same as the e46s.

I would try and look for a newer model in manual. These auto boxes are absolute pieces of cr@p.

The newer 3.0ds are 150kw and not 135kw they have a newer garret turbo which gives you boost at lower RPM. But the downside is their manifolds are made of steal and not cast iron and are known to crack.

Just change oil every 10 000kms and the car will run well after you are dead.

Just as testament to these engines mine is on 414 000kms. With the original turbo which is the older one which spools later which could be why its still around.

I think these gearboxes are a bit hit and miss... there's a bunch of high miler E39's here and the auto boxes are fine still :dunno:
