340i or 240i Deal

Hi guys, a buddy is looking to move on from his 320 F30 to a G20 340i or 240i. Budget tops at R900k low mileage or new deal.
Tough market as no 240i available on BMW site. Appreciate if you guys know of possible sale and advise.

Plenty 240i at that price. Some nicely specced ones as well. Also sure a search for 340i will yield many results. No need to limit himself to bmw dealers.

Tell your friend not to drive the 240 like an M car and do stuff like spinning etc. A mate of mine sold his and got the G87. His M240 gave him a lot of drive train malfunctions related to overheating. His engine mounts where also gone (3 of them). Car only had 30k km and he had it since new. On the drag strip he overheated the gearbox after doing a couple of launches. He also got a code related to fuelling. The car was completely stock, including the exhaust.

He went with the G87 as the x drive was limiting him as he wanted to have fun. The 240 is a great car but he should not get ideas and start spinning, doing x delete, and launching everywhere.

He test drove a 440i at SMG Tygervalley today with 24k km and impressed, albeit feels a bit heavy. 2022 model in great shape with MP up to 2028. Is taking the car

I loved the 240I, but the people that buy those cars are youngsters. And they beat and do a bunch of stuff to the car which when watching him and his friends that had the G series 240. It's a uni person/mid 20s persons car so unless you buy new, you may get issues.

The 440i and the 340i I think are the better choice. Especially the 440i. A 20-year-old won't be asking his parents to buy a 440i for them so on the used market those are a safe bet. That is the logic I used with my car, there is zero sub-30-year-olds that will buy a 640 because it is far from a cool car for young people.

3 and 4 series being for 'older' people isn't true. I have a different view

Daddy's cash of today has given many youngsters 3 and 4 series as their first cars... Granted some of the 30 and 40 year olds also identify as 18 year olds so that factors into things as well... :ROFLMAO: The M lites are perhaps the worst in terms of treatment, especially being cheaply modded. Unlike a neglected M, that will eventually be saved, they are destined to become parts/scrap metal. I have not seen many used Mx35 or Mx40s that didn't have signs of being pulled through their backsides by a prior owner.

5/6 is where I'd go for a safer bet, with 30-50 year old first owners at least.

I know the F series 340 and 440i are typically hand me downs to the kids. But typically youngsters dont want 4 door cars like the M340. But I do agree, the absolute safest bet is the M440i grande coupe and the 5/6/7 series.

Mine was owned by an old Afrikaans guy in Durban. Single owner car. Interior was/is spotless. He only did 82k km in 11 years.

When I was out with my friend in his M240i, it was a magnet for the youngsters in the car scene whereas mine got ignored and zero attention. We went to Midvaal raceway and his car got the typical attention from the young crowd and women. Mine got a ton of attention from the older guys. It was quite funny and polarising. They would ignore his and come straight to mine.

The same is happening now with his G87 M2 except the age group it is drawing in is more diverse. The younger guys and older guys like it but women are drawn to it the most. Even my wife only like the M2 from all of them.

I bought a Honda Civic Type R FK8, 2019 model year in Aug last year from WBC. Had 12400 km on the clock and was petrified of the car being trashed by the previous owner. Prior to purchase sent it to Honda Umhlanga to do compression test and comprehensive check at my own cost. Best R2200 spent as the car was pronounced to be in excellent condition. Amazing machine- but I reckon I got a unicorn.
