335's - cams broken???

Anyone heard of any 335's with broken cams due to sludging?

I heard of 6, at one dealer, at once.

But that's the only detail I got. Don't know when this was, could be a while back I suspect.

Happens to the e90 323i as well, apparently quite common. BMW SA's motorplan division are bitching about it....:nonono:

SMG Canal Walk still seem to be using Castrol, so guess what's in my car?! Forsdicks Tygervalley was using Engen Syntium 3000. Not sure what Auric Auto was using since they were the previous service agent that looked after my car before I bought it. What is the root cause of sludge build-up? Is it the lengthy service intervals (2 years or 25k km whichever comes first), or the type of oil?

I think we should all agree, at least, that edge sport is crap :roflol:

The carbon build up is on the valves due to the direct injection. The sludging or broken cams I have never heard of.

Okay, that's interesting. I know that the x35i motors are direct injection, but in the case on my 330i with Valvetronic it's apparently not direct injection. But more talking about general engine sludging in this case. For cams to break, I would imagine things have to be pretty bad at that point already! :fencelook:

The main issue is not what oil is used but rather the intervals between services, specially with the new models

I've heard about this from my neighbour on his C200 Kompressor. Stripped the valve gears due to sludging. Apparently it happens due to the fact that some old oil remains in the engine, because the Merc dealership sucks the oil out through the dipstick hole and some old oil stays behind. This is true and a very expensive fix. Needless to say he does not have the Merc anymore, but a Fortuner:thumbdo:

According to one of the head technicians at auto glen, the e90 engines have such tight clearances plus the fact that the engine oils used are so thin that the cams easily score the cam bearings thus damaging the cams and cylinder heads. I have seen some of the scored cams and heads, doesn't look pretty!!
One more reason to not go for the e90...:nonono:

So it would seem that its a design flaw then?? Wonder if you would have a viable claim if your car is out of motorplan and it breaks with this issue?? :dunno:

I also wonder if this problem will be present in all the F30's seeing that all of them are turbo-charged??
