Hi I have a constant vanos error that comes up - in gear acceleration drops the car into limp mode - a quick stop start sorts it out but it's temperary. I have changed the vanos units, cams, cam buckets, refurbed the injectors but the issue remains - any suggestions pls

What is the exact error that you are getting and what year model is your 335i?

Do you not have the inlet and exhaust vanos solenoids also?

Check for the error codes
2A82 - Inlet vanos soleniod
2A87 - Exhaust vanos solenoid

2A87 normally does that limp mode too, I am replacing it in my 330i this weekend and bought one from BMW yesterday for R1770. Just check if it isn't this exhaust one that is causing it because as you describe the car goes into limp mode and then on restart it is fine. Anyway, longshot but just check the exhaust vanos solenoid as it could cause those symptoms.

Vanos solenoids, They are also pretty easy to remove and clean yourself. And I think new ones are not too expensive. They are at the front of the motor, basically two plugs with 1 x M6 bolt holding each in place. Change the o-rings as well.

There is also little oil filters that feed oil to the solenoids behind a cover on the exhaust side of the motor at the front of the engine. Pretty kak job to remove and clean through the wheel well. If the solenoids or the filters are blocked you can pick up crap as they don't get enough oil pressure to the solenoids.

The filters are more like strainers.

When you put key in ignition and you press start without foot on break can you hear a funny noise coming from engine bay? If so the dreaded vvt motor and eccentric shaft is the cause, it's becoming a common issue on the n55 motors

The noise is strange like a small electric motor turning as it is trying to adjust vvt motor. I had your symptoms too, and it took a while for the guys to eventually sort it out
