335i Poor Quality Alloy rims

Hi all,

On a 335i of a friend of mine the rims seem to be developing cracks for no real reason as if the OE alloy rims were made from a poor quality aluminium. He buys the rims every time from BMW at R26000.00 a pop, as this is not covered my the Motorplan :blueCry: Are there any other owners experiencing this?

I had the same on my 6er. Literally had to have them repaired every month. Total ball-ache! One of the BMW senior techs told me that the rims were made from a too-soft alloy and that the run-flats are too hard on the rims, hence them being prone to cracking.

So it is a common problem then?

This is the rim:

I've got those rims on my 335 E92. So far so good, but I've told to be careful as they are prone to cracking. They are meant to be very light rims hence them breaking (well thats what BMW told me).

This has been discussed numerous times on the forum. The 225 rims are very lightweight....to such and extent that they are lighter then the bmw performance rims available for the e90. However, when paired with run flats (which have a very hard side wall), SOME rims and not all tend to crack along the edge. I had a set on my car for 9 months and had no such issues, however I wasn't using run flats.

This car is using run flats, so that is what is killing them then ...

Joburg Roads? I've also got run flats and sport suspension. If I do hit a pot hole or something, it hits hard and I really feel it! I check the rims everytime after a hard hit. I've got Pirelli RFT and they have lip that almost goes the edge of the rim, maybe that helps?

Yep, same tyres, but L/R tyre went flat 3 times already because of cracked rim, rim replaced, tyre flat again after driving only from Nelspruit to Polokwane and back ... Rim replaced twice, tyre replaced 4 times, I would also have wanted to get rid of the car if it was me.

Those 19's are prone to cracking, solution would be to go for a set of aftermarket rims or a set of 18's or non RFT's.
