After the Vanos try the MAF if not sorted.

& by xperience different petrol station do provide different fuels, sometimes u get mre km's & sometimes u get mre performance out of different petrol stations but i dnt not tink so much difference to make ur car ping.
sounds like fuel starvation & next in line will be faulty sensor which also will cause pinging due to many things like timing, air receive & fuel delivery, etc.

I will never understand cars - I used octane booster for about 4 weeks, but the pinking just carried on. Now in the last month no booster used and absolutely no pinking. so i'm happy but still scratching my head???

Be careful of what octane boosters you run. I was using some in my E46 M3 and they chowed my plugs quickly.

In regards to your problem, it was more than likely related to your Vanos. Think about it, if you Vanos was stuffed then your cam timing would have been out which would have definetely caused the pinging.

Stuffed Vanos will not cause pinking as your knock sensors will pull back ignition timing if it picks up any detonation! In anyway the Vanos working or not allows advancing and retarding in a range and any RPM any cam timing in that range will just cause power loss! advanced cam timing causes top end torque and retared cam timing causes botom end torque!
Pinking or detonation is caused when compression is too high or ignition timing is advanced too far or octane to low ( Higher octane means slower burning rate).. then your fuel ignites from the compression before the spark plug does what it does best! :thinker:

Its almost impossible for a new(ish) bmw to ping.. only thing that can cause detonation is faulty knock sensors or screwed ECU!

Cheap octane boosters key ingredient is Benzine and can cause spark plugs , Lambda sensors etc to die!
Stick to the known good ones!
